Drones are Taking off with Public Safety Agencies

Drones are getting more and more popular with many different fields and public safety isn't an exception. A business called fire cam that specializes in cameras that are heat resistant thermal cameras has noticed an increase in sales, in fact in 2017 there business has doubled in the amount of products it normal sells. Most of the products fire cam has been selling this year are cameras for drones such as the dji inspire 1 and dji M200. 70 percent of there sales are police departments and 30 percent are fire departments. The reason police are buying so many more is because the thermal cameras are making it much easier for police to find suspects and do crime seen analysis. The government investment is predicted to rise from $100 million a year to $250 million in the next 8 years and the local government market is predicted to quadruple its drone investments.

Questions

1. How do you think the increase in drone use will help/hurt public safety near you.

I already know that our fire department hear in town has a drone and is looking to use it to there advantage so i can see it being used to help the fire department by giving them a different perspective of the seen and allowing them to make better decisions than they could before.

2. Could you see yourself in the drone industry? If so what kind of work would you like to do? If not why are you against this industry?

I am very interested in the drone industry and would like to be involved in multiple different fields of the drone industry, such as general photography, agriculture, public safety, and inspection of construction sites.

  • Good job Hudson but you only replied on one day instead of three.

  • It always could hurt public safety but as a right now i'm not sure what harm these will do. It will be strange if one day these drones are all over the place but they mean well with them. I couldn't see myself in the drone industry but the=at doesn't mean i'm against it. I don't like that type of work so that's one factor but this idea could help with safety unless something goes wrong with the drones.

  • It would possibly hurt my public safety and privacy seeing as it could easily fall into the wrong hands. If somebody gets a hold of these drones with these cameras, they could know where you are and what you are doing at all times. It is almost scary to think about. But these drones can also do a lot of good for the police and fire departments since they have thermal cameras.

    • Drones are actually not very stealthy although many people like to think they are. The odds that someone is using a drone to stalk you is highly unlikely. I do understand that it is possible but not probable. I don't believe people should be afraid of drones for this purpose because anything in the wrong hands can hurt you.

  • 1. I think it will help the police department find people easier and it will be a faster way to see if there is a fire in the town. I think it will hurt the public's safety because their is always that one person that takes advantage of this and use it in a bad way. For example, I think people could somehow spy on other people. 2. I think it would be fun to be in the drone industry I love technology and all that type of stuff. I would love to build different type of drones, and try and test them.

    • Drones aren't actually the best way to stalk a person because of the restrictions and the amount of noise it makes. I personally have many drones and there is no way i could fly it in my neighbor hood and not have people 5 houses away hear it from inside there homes. I'm very pleased that someone else also enjoys technology and building this type of stuff, if you have the opportunity i recommend the class intro to engineering here at the high school. Its a great class and second semester you get the chance to design, build, and fly a drone.

  • 1. I believe that drones can be a good investment in the police and firefighters for all their characteristics, but even so I do not agree that so much money is invested in buying drones.

    2. No, I would not like to be in a drone company, I'm not against it, but I'm not interested.

    • This is actually a very small amount of money compared to what is invested in other things the government puts money into, the article just shows how the government wants to know more about the drone industry so they can better there knowledge. There is still a lot of things we don't know about drones and further technology that could be invented for drones.

  • 1) I think drones will not only help the only person but they will help farmers with their crops and they will help fire departments look to see how far the fire is and stuff like that. Also, the drones will help workers make better decisions working.

    2) I don't really see myself in the drone industry but I never know I guess.

    • I actually got the experience to work with some farmers over the summer using drones to help increase there yield. It is an amazing technological advance in the agriculture industry and actually really interesting to learn about. I recommend if you ever get the chance to try anything in the drone industry to go for it, the people in the industry are super smart and love sharing knowledge.
