DRIVE-BY SHOOTINGS!

A 28 year-old New Mexico man shot a police officer during a traffic stop on Interstate 40 in Cibola County, New Mexico.  The man named Robert Nelson alledgedly shot multiple shots at the officer while she was headed twards his GMC pickup on Interstate 40.   The article claims that the officer was struck by a shot but was able to fire back at the suspect.  By this point the suspect had got back in his pickup and started down Interstate 40.  The officer chased the suspect for a short pursuit and had back-up to put the suspect in custody.  Nelson was charged with attempt to commit murder, aggravated battery upon peace officer, shooting from a motor vehicle and resisting, evading or obstructing an officer.  Now what I think is that this is starting to get out of hand and ridiculous, expesialy to peaceful police officers.

Robert Benjamin Nelson of Scottsdale, Arizona, was charged with attempt to commit murder after allegedly shooting a police officer on September 12, 2020.

Do you think that police are doing as much as they can to protect themselves?

Do you think they should make better non-lethal wepons that protect the officer and the suspect at the same time so that the officer doesn't have to exit the vehicle?

  • Kody,

Be sure to add more personal thoughts and opinions nect time as that is what I want the focus to be. Not just a summary of the article. You replied back to students well. Just be sure to reply back three different days next time.

  • I think most police officers are doing whatever they can to protect themselves but many officers get out of hand with how they handle people. Of course I think they should make better non-lethal weapons to protect them. Anything thats safer to use and has a better effect on safety is something we should incorporate into the police force.

  • I think police officers are doing the most they can to protect themselves and others. In this situation, it isn't the police officers fault at all, as he was doing nothing wrong, so there was no need for the man to shoot the cop. I'm not sure what else cops could do or use to protect themselves and others from things like this happening.

    • I agree with part of this, but i also believe they could make morenon-lethal weapons.  (it's a lady actually.)

  • Non-lethal weapons like stun guns and rubber bullets might be effective to protect the officers but sometimes people can somehow resist a shock from a stun gun. Police defintiely don't deserve being attacked because they are trying to protect other people and just do there job. Its hard to fully realize that cops are risking their lives everyday because we usually only see them standing around and keeping watch. But they are, and they don't deserve being randomly attacked on the streets.

    • this is true but I'm not saying that they have to use stun guns and rubber rounds, I was thinking of like new in car non-lethal weapons.

  • I don't believe this is the police's fault at all the cops try their best to keep themselves and other safe. Also there was no need for that guy or anyone to just shoot someone  like that. He wasn't using it for self portection, so no need to even need to shoot. I don't think that there is much more the cops could use .

  • I think that the good police officers are getting too much hate for what some of the other bad police officers do.I also agree with your second question and they should have more protection that is non lethal.

    • yes, this is true also I belive that before some cops get the right to be able to shoot someone some of them should have military expierences.

  • I truly do believe police are trying their hardest to protect themselves and others as best as they can. If people just listened to the cops and respected them they shouldn't have to worry. People just should listen to the cop because if someone has their back turned to a cop. The cop doesn't know what he is doing on the side. Could have a gun, so cops have to always be cautious. I don't think there is much else cops could use or do with non-lethal weapons. A lot of times stun guns don't work.
