Doggy Down

After three hours and sixteen disrupted flights, a dog was killed. A ten month old airport security dog, who was about six months away from graduating, got loose and ran around on the tarmac. The dogs name was Grizz. Grizz was a bearded collie and German short-haired pointer cross. The dog was learning how to detect explosives by the AVSEC. The AVSEC is also known as The New Zealand Aviation Security Service. The police inspector Tracy Phillips, said in a statement, "This is not an outcome which anyone wanted." People also say that death was a last resort. At the moment of death, the dog wasn't on the tarmac.

1. Do you think that death could of been avoided? How?

2. How do you think the dog got loose?

I think that they tried everything that they could before death. Maybe if they kept trying for another hour this could of been avoid, but otherwise I don't think it could of. They say that they tried everything before calling the police to kill him. I think that maybe his collar wasn't on correctly or didn't fit.  It must of been an accident. Who knows maybe he escaped his cage or handler.

  • Great job Cassie!

  • I think they did make effort of rescuing the dog but they weren't lucky enough to get the dog out, but if they could have kept the dog under a good security then this wouldn't had happen. The dog was doing what he was looking for but unfortunately it came in a bad outcome.

  • This death could have been avoided. They could have tried to catch the dog, or coax away from the tarmac. Maybe the handlers lost grip on the lease and he got loose, or maybe he was in a kennel an escaped.

  • I do think that the death could have been avoided because they could have tried to catch somehow or use something to get him to go to sleep and then get him off of the tarmac. I think that maybe the handlers lost their grip on the leash and he ran away, or if they had him in a kennel or closed off area, he could have somehow gotten out of that.

    • They had tried things for 3 hours before resorting to killing him. They very well could of waited till he fell asleep to catch him.

  • i do think that death could have been avoided they cold have tranquilized the dog instead of shooting it. i think the dog got lose when they where trying to let a truck through the security gate

    • I never thought about tranquilizing him Malachi. That is a great point that instead of shooting they could of just tranquilized him.

  • I think the death could have definitely been avoided. If the dog had not gotten loose then the dog would definitely still be alive today. They should have kept track of the dog more closely. I think the person who was holding on to the dog wasn't really paying attention and the dog just got away.

    • That what I think Kara. If they could of kept a handle on the dog then they wouldn't have had the situation.

  • It could've been avoided if people were keeping an eye on him. The handlers probably weren't keeping an close eye on him.
