Dog Born Without Legs...

Leo is a Chihuahua from California. He was born without front legs so it made a little difficult to get around.  He was abandoned at the Riverside County Animal Shelter, where Yvette Bocz found him.

"We immediately clicked, and he's basically been with me ever since," she told CBS LA.

He makes his way around just fine and doesn't seem to notice he is difference from other dogs. But as Leo gets older, his shoulders are starting to get tired. So she called Cal State Channel Islands to see if the college could help.

"It was love at first sight. He's such a cuddly little guy. And I though: 'Yeah I'll help you with this.' Let's see what we can put together," said Phil Hampton professor at Cal State Channel Islands.

What they put together was one-of-a-kind prosthetic device made with a 3-D printer. After a few adjustments, Leo was off ans running.

The prosthetic works like a wheelchair. Leo shoulders sit in the custom harness allowing legs to move around and giving him the freedom to run and play like never before.

"It's like watching your child walk for the first time. Just watching him actually his is back legs like regular walking motion and wagging his tail. I see the potential that lies ahead for him. I'm very, very happy," Bocz said.

The Professors at Cal State Channel Islands said they plan to put their design online so that anyone with a 3-D Pinter can make the same prosthetic for their pet.

1- would you have adopted a dog knowing he only had 2 legs?

2- How would you react with this situation? OR Would you have done the same thing she did?

3- How would you feel to see a dog in this condition?

  • Good summary but you didn't reply.

  • Yes I still would. Even though it only has 2 legs I would still adopt it so it could have a fun life! I would try to do whatever I could to help the dog.

  • 1. I guess I could think about it. It would depend on the characteristics of the dog and other factors of the dog. I don't know if I would have much time to take care of its needs though.

    2. I would think of some way to make it easier for him on his own. I don't think I would go to experts to get if figured out.

    3. I would feel bad for it and I would wonder what happened to it. It is never good to see animals with missing limbs but there is always an explanation. Animals usually learn to adjust to their disabilities though.

  • ya i would adopt the dog and make sure it still has a fun life, i would feel bad for the dog.

  • I would still adopt the dog even though it didn't have its front legs. I would try to help the dog and I would to everything to make sure it would have a great life. I would feel bad for the dog, but in the same sense I would hope that it could still have a good life.

  • This is such a cute story! I would still adopt the dog knowing it only had two legs. I would do whatever I could to help my dog.

  • Yes because they have hearts too and are still loving dogs. I got a dog knowing he was deaf. I think their idea is really cool and I hope it continues to work.

    • I agree that dogs have hearts and care about how they are treated. I think it is awesome that your family decided to buy a deaf dog!
