Does water have a taste?

When asked if water has a taste most would say yes.  A water's taste can be affected by many factors, like where it is sourced from, if any minerals are added or taken out, and how it gets to you.  Whether it gets to you from a tap in your house or bottled water from the store.  There are also many different opinions when asking people what their favorite type of water is.  While how it gets to you and where it comes from matters in the taste, it also just comes down to your own opinion and taste buds.

There are two main types of water, spring water, and purified water.  Springwater is water that was sourced from underground and has natural minerals.  It was filtered by natural elements like clay and limestone.  Examples of spring water would be Fiji, Evian, and Nestle.  While purified water is water that is treated in processing plants where it goes through multiple steps to purify it from contaminants.  Examples of purified water are Dasani and Aquafina.  Many polls have been conducted and show that it doesn’t matter whether it's spring water or purified water but just matters on the brand.  The poll showed that the best water brands ranked by taste were Fiji and Evian and the worst were Nestle and Dasani.

Another factor that could play a role is tap/hose water and well water.  I know many people who love the taste of tap water and water from a hose but is there a difference between the tap water from a sink and from a hose?  Tap water runs to your house through pipes and sometimes is treated with fluoride.  While well water comes from underground it is filtered and has all its natural minerals.

In my opinion, I do think that water does have a taste and that the brand matters.  I don’t like most spring water brands because I just don't like the taste compared to other purified water brands.

Do you think water has a taste?

What is your favorite type and brand of water?

Do you like water?

  • Interesting topic +5! Great job Claire!

  • I think water has a taste because of the iron and minerals in it, also because theres a diffrence in the taste of branded water. My favorite water is hyvee brand becuase it is the most smooth because spring water taste like crap. I personally enjoy water.

  • I do think water has a taste because if it didn't then you wouldn't be able to tell the difference between two brands. Personally, I do not have a favorite brand of water. I also enjoy water, but I would prefer other types of drinks over it.

  • I personally think that there are few things better in this world than a good, refreshing glass of water. I do believe that water has a taste, and that I can distinguish different brands of water very easily. I do not think that I have a favorite water, but I definetly have a least favorite. That would be Dasani.

  •    I don't think water has any specific taste, but different brands of water do "taste different" but it's all just similar, it's kind of hard how to describe how water "tastes" other than water. I do drink water a lot especially when I am in sports to keep myself hydrated.

  • I don't really like water it is so boring to drink. But if I drink it or have to ,I prefer sparkling water because it is more refreshing at practice or hot days. I think water's taste is water I don't know how it should taste when it's just water.

  • Personally, I consider myself a bit of a water connoisseur.  I think that some waters are far superior to others.  Personally, I prefer SmartWater over most other bottled waters as it provides a cool, refreshing flavor without the overbearing plastic after taste that many lesser bottled water brands suffer from, like Dasani and Aquafina.

    • I agree with you that SmartWater is good and refreshing but I don't know why everyone doesn't like Dasani.  I have never noticed that it tastes like plastic until just recently when I heard from many people how much they didn't like it.

  • I do not think that water has any specific taste. I can understand that different brands of water can "seem" to "taste different" due to their brands, but I dont think that water really has a "taste". The only water that i think can have real taste is either sparkling water or water with flavoring such as grape, lime, etc.

    • I can see why you don't think it has a taste but since you say that different brands do taste different then I think, in my opinion, that means water has a taste.  I do agree that sparkling and flavored water does have a taste but that's because it actually has a flavor.
