Does Sunlight Make You Happier?

Do you find yourself mentally drained in the winter? Is your mood more unpleasant than usual? Summer seems to be the time when people are happiest. When I think of summer, I immediately associate it with the sun and the warm weather. Just thinking about it puts me in better spirits. So could the sun be the reason for our happiness?

The sun provides Vitamin D for the body. Vitamin D is healthy for the body and gives a person better cell growth as well as stronger bones. The sun can overall make your body feel healthier. Being in the sun can also escalate your serotonin which is released by the brain. Serotonin is supposed to make an individual feel calm and concentrated which then puts them in a happier mood. On the other hand, melatonin is meant for releasing hormones that make you sleepy. Melatonin is released when it is darker outside, therefore dark winter days make people more drowsy.

There is actually a disorder for a lack of sunlight called S.A.D(Seasonal Affective disorder). S.A.D affects approximately 10 million Americans in the U.S. S.A.D causes a person to be moody, depressed, unmotivated, etc. It usually affects people from the end of fall to the end of winter. Furthermore, colder and darker seasons can result in bad mental health.

From learning about the sun and its benefits, I think that it has a positive effect on people. I think that the darker it is outside, the more tired I am. Sometimes I associate tiredness with stress which makes me more sad. I would definitely say that sunlight makes me happier. During the summer I feel like I have more energy and I have a better attitude. Sunlight seems like it should be a necessity for most everyone.

Do you think the sun affects an individual's mood?

Are you happier during the summer?

Do you think most everybody needs at least a little sunlight?

  • I think that sun affects peoples moods. When it is nice outside lots of people go outside and are excited to not be stuck inside like they are when it is cold and cloudy. Sunlight is also good for your body, and most kids are happier in the summer.

    • I definitely think just being able to go outside and get in some activity makes me happier. My mood can completely shift when I go outside on a warm day after school. Adding the stress of winter time makes it harder to be in a happier mood.

  • I believe that the sun does make you happier because nobody is happy on rainy days. I also think that when spring comes around it makes people smile. I think that the sun makes everyone at least a lot happier.

  • I think people might also get happier because during summer they don't have schools. For most people they get a lot of stress with school and tests. So when it gets to summer they can relax from that. I think also sunlight has some nutrients that can make you feel healthier.

    • I definitely agree that school and tests during the winter make a huge impact on the way we act. It is so hard to be happy when we are stressed, but it is important to focus on the positives. The sun makes it so much easier to be positive in my opinion.

  • I definitely think the sun can affect peoples mood. When it is super nice out and I'm able to be outside I'm much happier then it being cold and gloomy and having to be inside. In the summer I'm much happier than in the winter. I think that people should be out in the sun and getting some sunlight.

  • I think that everyone needs at least a little bit of sunlight, I mean we have all seen Dracula, and he doesn't look to happy :) so I guess that would mean that sunlight it good. I mean, It makes me happier. Not just summer but even when it is spring and the snow starts to melt.

    • I think dark symbolizes sadness for a reason. During the summer time I feel like I am so much happier. I agree that whenever we get into seasons where the sun starts showing up, I begin to shift my mindset. I am more productive and I feel better.

  • I definitely think that the sun affects people's moods, and I am also definitely happier during the summer. There is no school, less stress, and warm weather. You can do more fun things in the summer without the weather being an issue. Everyone should get some sunlight.

  • i do think the sun can contribute to a persons mood. because in the winter time i like to stay inside because its cold but in the summer time i am outside all day so i get more sun.
