Does Sunlight Make You Happier?

Do you find yourself mentally drained in the winter? Is your mood more unpleasant than usual? Summer seems to be the time when people are happiest. When I think of summer, I immediately associate it with the sun and the warm weather. Just thinking about it puts me in better spirits. So could the sun be the reason for our happiness?

The sun provides Vitamin D for the body. Vitamin D is healthy for the body and gives a person better cell growth as well as stronger bones. The sun can overall make your body feel healthier. Being in the sun can also escalate your serotonin which is released by the brain. Serotonin is supposed to make an individual feel calm and concentrated which then puts them in a happier mood. On the other hand, melatonin is meant for releasing hormones that make you sleepy. Melatonin is released when it is darker outside, therefore dark winter days make people more drowsy.

There is actually a disorder for a lack of sunlight called S.A.D(Seasonal Affective disorder). S.A.D affects approximately 10 million Americans in the U.S. S.A.D causes a person to be moody, depressed, unmotivated, etc. It usually affects people from the end of fall to the end of winter. Furthermore, colder and darker seasons can result in bad mental health.

From learning about the sun and its benefits, I think that it has a positive effect on people. I think that the darker it is outside, the more tired I am. Sometimes I associate tiredness with stress which makes me more sad. I would definitely say that sunlight makes me happier. During the summer I feel like I have more energy and I have a better attitude. Sunlight seems like it should be a necessity for most everyone.

Do you think the sun affects an individual's mood?

Are you happier during the summer?

Do you think most everybody needs at least a little sunlight?

  • Sunlight do make me feel better after a long winter bc its super nice out. By the end of summer im tired of sunlight and think that we have sunlight a lot more than when  we don't. When its rainy and cloudy all i wanna do it stay inside and not go out.

  • I think it defintely does effects peoples' mood. You just have all the good memories of what you did outside when it was a good weather and that gives you a good feeling. I am definetely happier during the summer. I am more motivated to wake up in the morning.

  • Personally, sunlight does make me feel in a better mood. Sometimes when it is too sunny, however, like many days in a row, I start to grow bored of it. All in all, I believe that I enjoy stimulation the best, especially when the environment is constantly changing around you.

  • I've heard that it is proven that sun makes you happier, but it does not have to be same on every person. But weather indeed affects the mood.

    • I agree that it can be different for everybody. Some people are more affected by winter and fall. I would say that I am less affected by it, although I definitely feel a difference. As the days begin to get warmer, I can already see my mood changing.

  • I think that the sun can affect an individuals mood. I am happier in the summer because of the nice weather and sun. I enjoy being in the sun and my mood is much better when it is sunny outside vs. cloudy.

  • I think the sun can affect people's moods. It has been shown that gloomy, cold weather can affect people's moods, and I have noticed it myself. I am so much happier during the summer when I can be outside in the sun. It is very relaxing and definitely does make an impact.

  • I feel like the sun brightens up my day and makes me want to be out all day. Winter, in my opinion, is draining to me and I hate being cold. All I want to do is stay inside where the warmth is. So, I do think that it affects other people, espically me.

  • I think I am happier when there is more sunlight because it is nice to be in. I am pretty happy when it is sunny outside because it is warm out. I think everyone needs sunlight because everyone likes sunlight and it's much better than when it is cloudy because it makes the colors of everything pop out.

    • I agree that the warmth of the sun makes me much happier. On sunny days I have so much more motivation to do things. I also agree that everyone needs some sunlight in order to get their vitamin D in. The colors during the summer make me happier as well.
