Does Sunlight Make You Happier?

Do you find yourself mentally drained in the winter? Is your mood more unpleasant than usual? Summer seems to be the time when people are happiest. When I think of summer, I immediately associate it with the sun and the warm weather. Just thinking about it puts me in better spirits. So could the sun be the reason for our happiness?

The sun provides Vitamin D for the body. Vitamin D is healthy for the body and gives a person better cell growth as well as stronger bones. The sun can overall make your body feel healthier. Being in the sun can also escalate your serotonin which is released by the brain. Serotonin is supposed to make an individual feel calm and concentrated which then puts them in a happier mood. On the other hand, melatonin is meant for releasing hormones that make you sleepy. Melatonin is released when it is darker outside, therefore dark winter days make people more drowsy.

There is actually a disorder for a lack of sunlight called S.A.D(Seasonal Affective disorder). S.A.D affects approximately 10 million Americans in the U.S. S.A.D causes a person to be moody, depressed, unmotivated, etc. It usually affects people from the end of fall to the end of winter. Furthermore, colder and darker seasons can result in bad mental health.

From learning about the sun and its benefits, I think that it has a positive effect on people. I think that the darker it is outside, the more tired I am. Sometimes I associate tiredness with stress which makes me more sad. I would definitely say that sunlight makes me happier. During the summer I feel like I have more energy and I have a better attitude. Sunlight seems like it should be a necessity for most everyone.

Do you think the sun affects an individual's mood?

Are you happier during the summer?

Do you think most everybody needs at least a little sunlight?

  • Your topic is unique(+5) and you did a great job overall Taylor! I would like to see your summar a tad longer. While you have four paragrpahs, they are relatively brief.

  • Yes I think it does make a lot of people happy because they just like to be in the warmth of the sunlight. The sun is also good because it gives us vitamin D.

  • Yes, I do think the sunlight can effect my mood and just how I'm feeling in general. I think sunlight makes me more awake then on days that are dreary. I do think my mood is better in the summer when its warm and I can do activities outside and the sun is usually shining. Yes, I think that everyone needs sunlight for a little mood boost daily.

  • I think that sunlight has proven to help make people happier. I think it can change and affect your mood. I am happier in the summer because of the lack of school and increase in sun exposure. I think that everyone should make it a habit to get some daily sunlight.

  • I think sunlight would make you be in a slightly better mood, depending on if you like going outside. I like working outside and in the sun, so I think it makes me happier to a certain degree. However, this may not hold true to some, for example, people wo don't like to go outside.

  • I personally feel and also think that sunlight has the oppurtunity to affect your mood. I believe that if it is sunny and nice outside that it can make you feel happier, but if it is a rainy day and cloudy I think that it could make you more moody or sad.

  • I think sunlight can affect your mood. I know when I go out in the my mood improves. Getting enough sun is healthy for you in many ways but can aslo be harmful. I think everyone needs to go outside and get enough sun to be happier in life.

  • I think weather does affect people's mood, I know it does form me. When the sun is out I am very awake, I have a lot of energy and don't want to be inside. When it is a gloomy raining day, I am more relaxed, I actually like rainy thunderstorms rather than super sunny days.

  • I think that the sun can affect people differently. When I am out in the sun and I get hot I think I get tired and maybe even cranky. But when I am active in the summer I feel like I am a lot happier because im not suck in my house in the winter. I think it is good to get some sunlight and fresh air because staying inside all the time is not good for you.

  • I think that it most defenitly does. When in tropical places people are just happier than when they are sitting inside of a building. Think about a better feeling than walking outside and its warm out right after school. There simply is no better feelings.
