Do you think Covid help decrease or increase pollution?

Pollution is something that we have been hearing about for a long time, but in the past few years it has gotten worse. According to the State of air, 40% of Americans are living in a place with unhealthy levels of particle pollution. All this pollution can come from driving your vehicle, industries, wildfires, etc. One of my thoughts on pollution is how it reacted to Covid. Because first I think about how everyone needed to stay in their houses, this means you can’t go to your work, you don’t use your car, some industries stop working and flights decrease, all of these were things that generated pollution. This made that in some cities the air quality improved.

My second thought was that we had to add something else to our everyday routine if we wanted to go outside and what I’m talking about is a mask. Millions of people started using masks, but specifically disposable face masks, which means you use it for a day or for some hours and you throw it away. Imagine all the pollution masks have made. A study made by OceansAsia estimated that over 1.5 billion masks are believed to be in the ocean. Also with all the pandemic situation we needed to use way more medical stuff than we were using in the past. All this medical stuff generates more trash which at the end would create more pollution. I think Covid increased pollution more than decreased it.

Some ways that you can help the planet are by getting solar panels. The only problem with this is that not everyone can get them because they are expensive, you can also stop using plastic bags and replace them with cloth bags or tote bags, these are an easy way to stop the use of plastic. Another way is no more plastic straws. I think that places that are specifically on the coasts are starting to change this and try something more ecologic like paper or bamboo. Straws were usually found in the ocean and in animals which sometimes caused their death, this caused governments to take action on this, in some cities plastic straws are banned such as Washington, Miami and Malibu. I think governments should give more importance on making small changes that can give big results. I think they need to promote more about the importance of this, and how we are going to kill our planet if we continue like this.

    • I think you could do the same but with a reusable bag which will help the planet. There are also many things that can be made so this is just an option.

  • i think that covid helped reduce pollution due to the new regulations, like not being able to go anywhere and do anything without protection for yourself and others. I think it also helped with other things like less people using gas but also it had a few problems like toilet paper.

  • I believe COVID did actually reduce pollution globaly since everyone was quarantined in their homes. I think there should be research to find alternatives to the plastic bags, so we can try and reduce pollution as much as possible. I also believe the government has instated plenty of pollution-reducing laws, and now it's up to us, the people, to get together and save our planet.

    • I agree with you that we can look for different alternatives. Also I think we should start bringing alternatives to all the things that cause pollution and use them.

  • I think that covid helped to increase pollution because of people using reusable masks and those being left everywhere or being littered. I also think that plastic bags should not be banned because they are very useful in our society.

  • I thin covid increased pollution by people litering there mask, and I think having mask on inreased pollution as well. No I don't think plastic bag because they can be useful in our world, but I do think people should work better on there usage of them. Yes I think they should because it would help us and the world. Everyone should work on better habits with pollution

    • I agree that sometimes people use a plastic bag and they don't even need them, and they just waste them. I think using something more ecological would be a great idea like a paper bag or a tote bag.

  • I can see how it could help reduce pollution because we're focusing on other things right now but also I can see how it's not increasing pollution.. It depends on who you're looking at and what you're going off of. I do think we could do something else about the plastic bags because they may be a problem but then you're never going to completely get rid of them because most people use them for grocery bags and many other purposes like that.

    • I agree with you it depends on which type of pollution we are talking about. For example water pollution increases way more with covid, but air pollution decreases. I also think we could bring different alternatives and different ideas to reduce pollution.

  • I can see how covid both helped and made pollution worse. I guess it got better in some ways and got worse in others. I do agree that we need to start promoting better products. Our world pollution is a problem and if we don't find some way to change, there will be more problems.
