Do you think Covid help decrease or increase pollution?

Pollution is something that we have been hearing about for a long time, but in the past few years it has gotten worse. According to the State of air, 40% of Americans are living in a place with unhealthy levels of particle pollution. All this pollution can come from driving your vehicle, industries, wildfires, etc. One of my thoughts on pollution is how it reacted to Covid. Because first I think about how everyone needed to stay in their houses, this means you can’t go to your work, you don’t use your car, some industries stop working and flights decrease, all of these were things that generated pollution. This made that in some cities the air quality improved.

My second thought was that we had to add something else to our everyday routine if we wanted to go outside and what I’m talking about is a mask. Millions of people started using masks, but specifically disposable face masks, which means you use it for a day or for some hours and you throw it away. Imagine all the pollution masks have made. A study made by OceansAsia estimated that over 1.5 billion masks are believed to be in the ocean. Also with all the pandemic situation we needed to use way more medical stuff than we were using in the past. All this medical stuff generates more trash which at the end would create more pollution. I think Covid increased pollution more than decreased it.

Some ways that you can help the planet are by getting solar panels. The only problem with this is that not everyone can get them because they are expensive, you can also stop using plastic bags and replace them with cloth bags or tote bags, these are an easy way to stop the use of plastic. Another way is no more plastic straws. I think that places that are specifically on the coasts are starting to change this and try something more ecologic like paper or bamboo. Straws were usually found in the ocean and in animals which sometimes caused their death, this caused governments to take action on this, in some cities plastic straws are banned such as Washington, Miami and Malibu. I think governments should give more importance on making small changes that can give big results. I think they need to promote more about the importance of this, and how we are going to kill our planet if we continue like this.

  • Great job Alexia!!

  • Covid actually helped reducing pollution. You can see this on different data sets that were published. I think plastic bags should be banned and replaced by paper bags. That's what a lot of other countries already did for example Germany. I also think that the government should be more initiative with reducing pollution. They maybe already give their best but I think that they could do more.

  • I think that covid definetly helped reduce the amount of polution in the air. I also think that their are a lot of things that we could do to reduce pollution like banning plastic bags and bottles. I also think that the goverment should have stricter laws on littering and have higher fines for littering.

    • I agree with you that the government should have stricter laws and fines so people would think twice about doing it. I also think that we can do many things to reduce pollution and they don't need much effort.

  • In my opinion Covid might have helped reduce the amount of pollution for awhile but not for very long. But also with all the disposible masks I can see how a lot of them could end up in the ocean causing more pollution than decreasing it. I do think that we should start using less and less plastic bags and start using more cloth.

  • I beleive that for a while Covid was helping decrease the amount of pollution around the world. But it quickly started to increase the amount of pollution with the usage of masks and people leaving them anywhere. I think that we should aim towards having more restrictions on plastic bags. There are solutions that have helped reduce the use of plastic bags and straws and we should take advantage of that to help keep our earth clean. I also do think the government should put in place rules that will help decrease pollution.

    • I agree with you that the government should put more rules or bring ideas on how to reduce pollution. I believe that there are many ways of reducing pollution with small changes in our everyday life. Changing the material of the bag you are going to use I personally don't think is difficult to do, paper bags or cloth bags are not even as expensive as buying a solar panel.

  • In my opinion Covid did not helped pollution in any way; reason i think so is people stayed in their homes, which means that we use more devices and create more Carbon Emission, also disposable plastic masks are actually killing the animals in north pole, since plastic is not something that they are familiar of; so i think covid has more bad influences than it's positive influences to pollution.

  • I don't think Covid has helped pollution at all. In fact, since Covid started people are littering disposable masks all the time. Because everyone is so focused and worried about covid no-one is activily helping stop pollution.

    • I agree with you since covid started people put less focus on pollution. If we talk about air pollution I think covid did help, but if we talk about water pollution I think it didn't help and in fact it is worse with it.
