Do USA police have enough training?

Do you think that our police force in the US has enough training? Well I Dont. I think that the police in the US are serverly undertrained and that the training that is in place isnt very good in the first place. American police are trained on the wrong things. Stuff like self defence and gun saftey these are good things that need to be learned although nessary things are skipped most of the time. Usually when there is a situation with US police officers involving someone who's deemed mentally unfit they just use force and arrest the person or at least restrain them, while in other countries they have special offices that are trained in dealing with and calming down these people. Basicly in my opinion American police rush things and often dont follow procedure

“Cops in Norway: require 3 years of training, 4 people killed since 2002. Cops in Finland: require 2 years of training, 7 people killed since 2000. Cops in Iceland: require 2 years of training, 1 person killed since ever. Cops in the U.S.: require 21 weeks of training, 8,000+ people killed since 2001.”

  • This is a great topic choice Gavin but you just needed to do more with it. Be sure to inlcude sources and ask a couple of questions. You didn't reply to any student comments which is worth 30 points. -10 late

  • I feel that cops do need more training. Police are often put in life and death situations and I don't think they can fully trained for these types of situations in  just 21 weeks. I think that more training would make the cops better at deesclating situations and solving problems.

  • I do not believe that cops have enough training. Cops are a humungus part of our society and a very important part of our society. There jobs can be either a amazing thing or sometimes unfortunatly bad things happen. and 75% of the bad times it comes from not having enough training so I think that they should definiatly get more training to lower the number of mistakes that are made.

  • I think cops need a little more training than right now with how many deaths their have been. I think all upcoming police officers need a little more safty practice with guns and stuff like that. Then I think there will be less deaths with accidents like misplacing your gun.

  • I think that the united states police do not have enough training. I think the United States could have more restrictions for people to become police. The United States need more training for cops so they don't kill people that should not be killed. If they had more training there would be less deaths.

  • I think if you are going to be able to walk around cities with a gun on your hip and shoot people as a job, you should have a lot of time-consuming training. Police officers should have extreme training for mental issues, such as de-escalating a situation or dealing with someone who is going through psychosis. There have been way too many instances where innocent people were killed because the police officers were not trained properly for the type of situation they were in. It is not safe having a squad of police with fight or flight instincts that are not controlled.

  • No beucase police these day replace the phone as a gun and mix up a taser and gun so mabey a little longer or stronger and more harder so they know what to do in certain situations in stead of shooting get the taser.

  • I think our police system is undertrained and overstretched. The system as a whole is broken. Issues that would be better dealt with by social services are given to police. Our policing system is very of-force even though 9/10 calls are non-violent. Policing, as we know it now, is a broken system.

  • I think that the United States should require more training for cops because like you have stated there is more people killed. 21 weeks is just not nearly enough training for you to have the decision of using a gun. The thing is there is also way more violance going on in the U.S then in those other countries.

  • Seeing that quote really does put into perspective how undertrained the police are. I never relaized it was the amount of training the officers had. I agree that specially trained police officers should be trained to handle mentally ill people.
