Disney Criticized For Filming "Mulan"

The new Disney Movie “Mulan” came out this year on Septmeber 4th. When I watched it myself I loved this movie. I had watched the cartoon version before, but I think the live-action in the new one is amazing. However, Disney is being criticized for filming this movie, and I didn’t even know about it. Some of the movie was filmed in Xinjiang, west of China. Most Uighurs live in this area. They follow the Islam religion. It doesn’t seem like much of a problem to me.However, the majority of the people in China are not Muslim. The Chinese governemnt treat the Uighurs poorly by locking them up in camps and forcing them to accept the Chinese way of life. They can’t have children and are also forced to drink Chinese medicines. Human rights activists are claiming Disney would have seen these camps while fiming, but is just simply ignoring what's going on in Xinjiang.

Also, they say that Disney just wants to make money since China is the second largest audience for movies. Disney made no comments on these claims. In their defense, I wouldn’t either. I think it’s just people trying to start drama and dont want Disney to succeed. It is a shame that these people in China are forced into camps, but I would think if Disney would have seen something while filming, they would have spoken about it. Because of this coronavirus and loss of money, Disney needs this movie to succeed. However, many people are speaking against this movie saying not to watch it. Click here for more information.

Do you think Disney is selfish enough if they had seen these camps to not say anything about it and just worry about making money?

If you were Disney and saw these camps, would you say something or just keep quiet?

  • Very well done Caitlyn and great story choice!

  • disney was being selfish, how can you ignore camps filled with muslims that are being treated as though they are not people too.  i don't think this multi-million dollar company needed money THAT bad. they could have reported the camps and filmed on a set somewhere in LA and not risk more covid-19 issues.

  • I honestly dont think disney would be selfish enough to do something like that. Sure like you said they need the profit from this movie cause of corona but i dont think in the process they would idly sit by if they seen that happening. I would like to say that i would say something but at the same i dont know what saying something would cause. Like maybe me speaking up about it would make the Uighurs situations even worse, and or cause a lot uneeded problems between us and China. Basically what im saying is that we probably dont know everything. Like most situations theres a lot of factors to be played than one might think..  With that being said,  if i knew speaking up would help those people and not cause any huge damaging repercussions then i would say something in a heart beat.

  • I feel like Disney would have stopped the production of the movie if they had seen the camps because that would ruin their reputation as a movie business and telivison business as well. The movie is based off of Japan China area so it does make sense to have some of the production in the Japan  China area.

  • These camps are probably more reserved, and lots of people probably haven't heard of them. I doubt Disney had any idea that this was going on, and if they did, they weren't trying to offend people. Disney probably just wanted to have parts of the movie in China because that's where the movie takes place.

    • I agree with you Ellie. I also think Disney had no idea about these camps. I wouldn't think they would just be in plain sight to see. All they wanted to do was make a movie and here are these human rights activists trying to make a big deal about it.

  • I don't think Disney had any idea about these camps while filming. Concentration camps like the ones the Uighers are in are not just out in the open. Disney more than likely wouldn't have even seen these camps, and if they did, they probably thought it was something else. If I were Disney and I saw these camps, I would  not opening admit to seeing these camps because I may be targeted, but I would do some work behind the scenes to help those people.

    • I agree with you Ava. I also think Disney did not see these camps. I am sure they are not in plain sight to see either. If you are filming a movie and saw these camps I don't think you would continue until you notify someone about the situation.

  • I don't know really, I mean it was kind of selfish they didn't tell anyone about it but it's life. I would personally say something because thats just who I am. I'd help people even if I couldn't afford to. It's just moral code.

    • I disagree with you. The activists are speculating and claiming Disney would have seen these camps. They never said they did for sure. It is nothing certain that Disney saw these camps so I can only think that they didn't see anything.
