Well the deaths of Farrah Fawcett, Michael Jackson, and Billy Mays all occured this summer. Michael's death was COMPLETELY overrated!! It happened in June and i still hear about nearly every day. It's terrible that he died and it's really sad. But it's been established that he died so everyone can just move on now.
Farrah Fawcett the same day and they only talked about her for like a week. I'm not even sure how she died. All i remember from that week is hearing about Michael. She was a great actress and model.
Billy Mays was possibly the best spokesperson ever. Although i had to turn down the volume when one of his Oxi Clean commercials came on, he was great. I only heard about his death like once the whole summer.
All three will be greatly missed.
Well I have to agree with heather about health care and then Michale Jackson. And then most of America is watching what Obama is doing along with the economy. Lets just say there has been many things going on during the summer.
Well the first major news event was the hijacking of an American cargo ship by Somali pirates. The pirates held the captain of the U.S. flagged Alabama hostage on a small life boat while negotiating with the U.S. Navy. Then on Easter the Navy took action under President Obama's orders to free the captain and his crew and they followed through.
The second major news event that happened this summer was the swine flu or also called the H1N1 virus. The virus started in mexico and as people flew in and out of the country if quickly spred around the world. Althow not many peolpe died it gave the world a great scare. Because they didn't want another swine flu epidemic.
I would have to say a major new story was the swine flu. It didnt kill a lot of people but it still caused a lot of scares to most people. I was amazed when scientist starting thinking it was it was the same virus that killed people in a great war I cant remember which one though.
A day or two before school started Usain Bolt smashed the world record in the 100 meter dash and has epically upheld his title of the world's fastest man at 9.59 seconds. Bolt won the Gold for Jamaica in the 2008 Olympics, and just the other day beat his previous record by an outstanding .11 of a second, the greatest time increase since the electric stopwatch was invented in 1973. Bolt also set a new 200 meter dash record one or two nights ago with 19.19 seconds. Holy cow that guy is fast.
Well, obviously the issue of Healthcare comes up. The townhall meetings that have sprung up have created so much contriversy over the issue that I actually find it rediculous. The rumours spread by scared insurance agencies and ignorant citizens of this country started as almost entertaining. Now, its slightly infuriating.
Things aren't helped by the fact that cable news networks, like Fox for example, are more concerned about spreading their own views and agendas to viewers than misinforming them.
Maybe we should be used to this by now; Fox being too conservative and CNN being too liberal...but is it wrong to wish for news to be delivered unbiasly? To actually get back to the roots of "fair and balanced"?
I think that if the biased pundants hadn't been involved, healthcare wouldn't be as hugely controversial. Maybe I'm wrong but in the end, I consider healthcare to be THE major news story of the summer.
