Did James Earl Ray Actually Kill Martin Luther King Jr.?

Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated on April 4th, 1968 at the age of 39. He was said to have been killed by James Earl Ray. But was he really killed by James Earl Ray? None of Kings children think so, Kings children have worked very hard trying to preserve his legacy and keep it alive. Sometimes they have very different views on how they should preserve his legacy, but every single one of them believes that James Earl Ray did not kill their father.

As Bernice King, the youngest of Kings children says, "It pains my heart, that James Earl Ray had to spend his life in prison paying for things he didn't do." Corretta Scott King was very open to the belief that a conspiracy led to the assassination of her husband. Corretta's family filed a law suit in 1999 so that they could put more information into the public eye. A Memphis jury ruled that all levels of the government were liable for the death of Martin Luther King.

William Pepper is a lawyer who has never stopped trying to prove that James Earl Ray didn't kill MLK. Even though James Earl Ray died behind bars in 1998 Pepper has never ceased to keep investigating the death of MLK. According to the Washington Post, "Pepper has tracked down witnesses in Memphis who support his theory of the case: that J. Edgar Hoover used his longtime assistant, Clyde Tolson, to deliver cash to members of the Memphis underworld, that those shadowy figures then hired a sharpshooting Memphis police officer, and that officer — not Ray — fired the fatal shot.

So who did kill MLK? Was it James Earl Ray, or did he spend all those years behind bars for nothing? I personally think that is was not James Earl Ray and that he is innocent, but I guess the world has yet to find out.

Do you think that James Earl Ray killed MLK or do you think that it was someone else like a police officer?

I personally think that is was someone else not James Earl Ray because they have found many things that suggest that he didn't kill MLK.

Do you think that William Pepper is going to too much work trying to find out who actually killed MLK?

I do not think that William Pepper is going to to much work because MLK was a very big part of U.S. history and whoever killed him needs to be found out whether they be dead or alive.

  • Good story choice and well done Seth!

  • I think that it could be possible that he was not killed by james earl ray but it could have been a cop I think that they should have looked into it before they put him in jail for the rest of his life because he might not have killed MLK that would suck to do all that time for nothing

    • I agree with you that it would be terrible to stay in jail all of that time if you really didn't commit a crime at all. I also agree with you that they should have looked into the assination more because it seems very unfair toward James Earl Ray.

  • I don't belive that James Earl Ray killed MLK, I think that it was someone else that killed him. It could have been James Earl Ray, but I don't think so. I could have been a cop. I feel as though William Pepper should be doing this work as long as he wants to . He may come acroos MLK killer.

    • I agree with you that James Earl Ray did not kill MLK because there is more and more evidence that suggests that. I also agree with you that William Pepper should continue his work because he could expose who killed MLK even though they are probably dead.

  • I think its its a possibily that James Earl Ray did not kill MLK because there is more evidence that shows he did not kill MLK. I agree I don't think William Pepper is going into too much work trying to find out who actually killed MLK because whoever actually killed him should be found.

    • I agree with you that it is very possible that James Earl Ray did not kill MLK because there is a lot of evidence that shows that he probably didn't. I also agree with you that William Pepper is not putting in too much work because MLK was and still is a very influential person in our country.

  • I'm not sure who killed Martin Luther King, but I have heard that there are cospiracys that James Earl Ray may have not. I think that if William Pepper is finding evidence that James Earl Ray did not kill MLK then keep going and prove a lot of people wrong.

    • I personally think that James Earl Ray did not killed MLK because there is so much evidence that suggest that he did not. I also agree with you that if William Pepper finds the evidence he needs, then he could prove a lot of people wrong.

  • I don't know for sure who killed Martin Luther King Jr. I didn't even know until reading this that there was any question about who killed him. Reading though this I am leaning towards James Earl Ray did not kill MLK but maybe instead someone was hired to kill him. I think it will be hard to find the real killinger because so many suspects or witnesses are now dead.
