Thursday, February 4,2020, there was a massive snow storm throughout the midwest. In Iowa there was a tragic 40 car pile up along Interstate 80 that was west of a town Newton, Iowa. Two Iowa state patrol troopers were assisting others involved in the accident as the larger pileup took place. There were a couple serious injuries and several minor injures, however, there have been no deaths. If you are driving in a blizzard with whiteout conditions, you shouldn’t be driving. Nobody should be driving in such weather, roads should have been shut down temporarily.
Whiteout conditions are when there is so much snow that it almost looks like fog. It is a very serious condition where you have a hard time seeing out you windows. If you can’t see out your windshield you shouldn't be driving. Especially going fast, in a snow storm if you have to be driving, you should be going slightly slower. Many people speed why on the interstate, this is how many accidents occur. But, if you are in the middle of a blizzard , in serious conditions, you should be going slower, or you shouldn’t be driving at all. At the scene of the accident on Thursday, two trooper were checking on crash victims while there two cars were totaled in wreckage. The two cars were crushed underneath a semitrailer, luckily the troopers were out of the cars and there were no fatalities.
I think that the roads should have been shut down for a couple of hours to let the storm pass. If they would have closed the roads during the whiteout conditions we could have prevented the accident. We should always take precautions during severe sno storms, the Iowa Department of Transportation should have closed the roads. The Iowadot should have supervised the weather and conditions of roads. However, people who are driving in these conditions are partly to blame. They were going to fast for the conditions that had been broadcasted over the radio and the news.
1.) What would you have done if you were in the accident?
2.) Do you think that the Iowadot should have closed down the roads? Why or Why not?

Well done overall Taylor! I'm not a fan of the topic you chose. Accident stories are just hard to bring about good discussion. Your first question is one I see all the time with stories like this and is just something I want to avoid.
If I was in this situation I would be scared and worried about it getting worse and someone dying. I think they definitely should’ve closed down the roads until it was cleared and until the storm was over. If Iowadot closed the roads this could’ve been avoided but at least there were no deaths.
if i were involved i would have been very scared just because of how many other cars were involved and you'd think more injuries would have occured. I think the roads should have been cleared off at least until they could have been properly cleared off. It may have been avoided if we had an order to not drive.
If i was in the accidnet i would try to make sure other people are okay, and I would call my family to tell them about what happened. I would not be opposed to them closing down the roads because their is always those people who won't take certain percautions due to the weather.
Looking at this picture I am surprised there weren't any more serious injuries. If I was in this accident I would be very scared, I would try to get out of the situation. I think it would be hard to close down the interstate because some people have to get places, but I agree people should not have been driving.
I think that if I was in this situation I would quickly climb out of the car and get as far away from the road as possible because more cars would be coming and some of them would probably try to swerve to avoid a crash. I think that the road should have been shut down because you can't even see the road. People were forced to drive on those roads in an attempt to get to work.
I would have tried to make the most out of the situation. You would have to think fast and hope for the best, I would try to get out of there as soom as possible. I think the DOT shouldn't have closed all roads, but maybe this stretch of road would be better. This way it would allow time for clean up and safe passage afterwards.
I think people could have been driving more cautiously due to the inclement weather conditions. I think the Iowa DOT should have closed the roads because it would've prevented this from happening and it would've encouraged many people to reduce their travel during this snow storm.
i think that the roads should have been closed because it would have helped to keep people off the roads and keep them from making this big pile up and they should have been cleared off i would have stayed calm and drove slowy and kept to the side just in case anyone else was coming
I would have probably stayed calm and maybe got out of the car and went to the side so I wouldn't harm myself as more and more cars kept crashing. I think they should have closed the roads because with the conditions that day weren't good for driving and in the picture there are a lot of semis and they are always in a rush and don't take it slow so when things like that happen it ends like the picture.
