DC vs. Marvel: Why DC is the Better Franchise

Since the creation of these comics, DC and Marvel have been fighting against each other for the people’s attention. DC comics was created in 1934, with Marvel following in 1939. Today, it has become a big debate between comic-loving fans about which franchise is the better one. From having the weirdest and strangest characters, Marvel copying DC’s characters, to having characters with more tragic backstories, here is why DC is better than Marvel.

While Marvel has many characters that are loved by everyone, DC has a wide range of characters with different abilities. My first example is Metamorpho, or Element Man. He has the ability to change his body into any element or complex element compounds. Another example of an interesting character is Detective Chimp, or Bobo. Known for being a hard drinker and smoking cigarettes most of the time, Bobo is also extremely intelligent and would always try to help as much as he could. And lastly, is Polka-Dot Man. He has the ability to change the dots on his costume into different and destructible devices. It is no doubt that DC has been able to create many characters that have unique abilities.

Many people know that DC has copied some of Marvel’s characters, but did you know that Marvel has done the same? Solomon Grundy, who was introduced in 1944, has superhuman strength, healing powers, and basically can’t die. Later on in 1962, Marvel released the first Hulk comic. While there are some key differences between the two, it seems as though Marvel copied the basic character design of Solomon Grundy, and became more successful from it.

While Spider-Man has one of the saddest origins in the Marvel comics, I believe that Jessica Cruz, who later becomes one of the Green Lanterns, has an even sadder backstory. While on a hike in the woods, Jessica and her friends found a mob that was trying to bury a body. After noticing the group of friends, the mob killed all of them in front of Jessica, with her barely escaping. She later develops PTSD and crippling anxiety, which all leads to her locking herself in her apartment for four years. She is later chosen by the Ring of Volthoom (evil equivalent to the Green Lantern Ring) as a host. The Ring feeds on guilt and fear, something that Jessica Cruz is full of. Later on, Batman teaches her how to overcome her fear, isn’t influenced by the ring anymore, and joins the Justice League. I feel as though anyone can say that Jessica Cruz’s origin in the DC comics is one of tragedy and being able to overcome what haunts you the most.

The debate about whether DC is better than Marvel, and vice versa, is one that has been and will continue to go on. DC has a further range of characters who have rare abilities, has been copied by Marvel, and has characters with more tragic backstories and origins than Marvel. I’m sure you all know where I stand on this topic. I want to know what the rest of you think.

Do you believe that DC is better than Marvel, or the opposite?

Why do you personally think that?

Do you think that because one is more popular and successful than the other, it automatically makes it the superior franchise?

  • As I commented to Daniel a few minutes ago, I love this idea as it's never happened before. Very clever idea! Your summary is great and you did a great job Angie!

  • I have never really watched any of their moveis so I can not really say wich one is better but i definetly think that they are both good movie producers. I also think that just because one is bigger than the other that does not neccisarily mean that it is better than the other.

  • I personally think Marvel is better I have watched more Marvel movies and have enjoyed them. But, if I watched more DC I wouldn't know which would be better. I do also think that Marvel is the bigger brand especially in the box office compared to DC. Overall I think Marvel is better.

  • I think that Marvel is better because of there variety of movies. Even though marvel has copied some of DC's characters I still think Marvel is better. There is a reason they are more popular and I think it;s because their movies really are great. they are very entertaining and have been very successful.

    • I agree with you. I also feel that if DC was able to produce better movies about their characters, it would become more successful than what it currently is.

  • Marvel is in all ways superior to DC as marvel has shown time and time again why this is true. Anyone who thinks DC is better is clearly lost. I also watch more Marvel movies than DC movies. I think DC should sell their company to Marvel so then maybe they wouldn't be such a failure of a franchise.

  • I think that Marvel is the better of the two franchises. I personally think that because I watch more of marvels movies. M opinion is bias. I prefer everthing that marvel makes over DC. I think that because it is more popular and more succesful that obviously makes them better because that is the whole point.

  • i think there the same dont like one over the other. cause there almost the same people just with different stuff but do the same thing.

    • I somewhat agree with you. There are many characters that very similiar to eachother in both universes.

  • In my opinion they are one of the biggest competitions in the whole world but i don't think any of them is better than the other because it is an undeniable fact that they copy each others. They are constantly trying to get one more step ahead and prove they are better but i'd say it is hard to notice the difference.
