day of silence April 15 2011

What it is :

The National Day of Silence brings attention to anti-LGBT(lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and trans gender) name-calling, bullying and harassment in schools. Each year the event has grown, and now hundreds of thousands of students participate to encourage schools and classmates to address the problem of anti-LGBT behavior. Founded in 1996, the Day of Silence has become the largest single student-led action towards creating safer schools for all, regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression

What you do: all you do for the day of silence is be quiet for an entire day. it may be hard but it's well worth it. if someone ask you wehy your silent explain to then this is why. also show respect to your teachers if they ask you something

Why i got involved : i do this every year now after reading this http://www.glsen.org/cgi-bin/iowa/all/news/record/2400.html

  • I could not do this for a whole day! I have too many people to talk to, but i will be respectful that day like always :]
  • I don't think even I could stay silent for an entire day. I like to think it's the thought that counts though.
  • I think this is a good idea. Its just going to be hard to conquer not being able talk for a whole day! It'll be a challenge thats for sure!!
  • I think acknowledging prejudice against the named sexual orientations would have a much more positive effect if they did something other than just being silent. How can you tell the difference between a shy person and a supporter? I get that its symbolizing keeping your mouth shut and not insulting people or making fun, but addressing this issue would be a lot easier if people voiced their opinions about it rather than trying to be quiet.
  • umm, this probably is not something i would choose to take part in,
  • I'm going to start a movement against that particular day =D
  • I think its a good cause and everything but I don't think many people can/want to do that at school. Keeping quiet for a whole day is easier said than done.
  • It's a good cause, but Im not going to be able to do it. It would be easier if we weren't at school during this time, but I'll keep the day in mind.
  • I talk a lot. I couldn't keep quite at all, but I do think it's a good cause.
  • Eh, not worth it. I apologize to any affected.
