Daughter's Death With Dignity

In early 2014, 29 year old Brittany Maynard was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer. After a lot of thinking and suffering, she realized that she would only be getting worse rather than better. Brittany was living in California but decided to move to Oregon so she could take advantage of the Death with Dignity Law. She believes that every state should make this legal, that way it is more convenient and affordable. Brittany thinks that everyone has the right to decide if they would like to keep fighting their disease or if they want to end their lives. Her husband and parents are in support with Brittany’s decision.

---QUESTIONS---

  1. What are your thoughts on this law being legal in some states?

  2. Do you think every state should legalize the law? Why or why not?

  3. How would you feel if you were her husband or her parents?

  4. What would you do if you were Brittany?

My Opinion: I do think people should have a choice because it is their life and they should not have to suffer. But at the same time I believe God has a purpose for your suffering and you should pray and try and tough it out. I would be sad especially because she is their only child, but I would respect their choice. I think it depends on your pain, but I would try and fight for awhile.

  • You always do a great job with these Perri!  Great story choice!

  • I think this is such a inspiring situation, I agree that this law should be legal in more states due to the fact that I support peoples choices of wanted to have things their way. No one should be forced to push on longer if that don't feel the want to. That's not necessarily a bad thing its want they want as a individual and as long as their family feels the same then its perfectly fine.

    • Yes, many people agree with this law so instead of only have it legal in some states it should be legal in all. I see where some people think this is suicide but I think it should still be their choice if they would like to do this or not. Especially if their family does not have a problem with it.

  • To a certain degree I agree with this law becoming legal because there are people who go through a lot of pain with cancer and other severe illnesses. I don't think it should become legal in every states, but only for the states that people are interested in this law. I would support her because she would be going through a lot of pain. It depends on how much pain I was in if I was trying to make that decision.

    • Yes, this is exactly what I thought. It is hard to take a side here because you know what is right, but you also think they should be able to chose. Very true, you would be sad and supportive and you have to be in the situation to know what you would do.

  • I think it should be there choice because you know its their life and if they know that they don't have much time let them do it how they want to! I think that they should! I would let her be her and let her make her own decision because if she knows she doesn't have much time let her be her and let her do what she wants to do before she passes. I would do the same and fight for my life.

    • True, she does not have much time left so she should be able to chose how she would like to end it. That's good that you want to fight it, because you never know if it could just disappear.

  • I think its a good idea. The laws should be made legal everywhere for all the people who are in pain and suffering that can't afford to end it. I think its the persons choice because we don't know how they are feeling, we can't feel their pain. But we can see their suffering. If i were her husband or parents and saw that she was in pain and that she was suffering from her disease and she wasn't getting better I would understand that it was that time. But if it was a situation where they were getting better but they didn't want to fight anymore i'd say have a good talk with them and explain that you know that their in pain but they are making progress and they are so close.

    • I agree, although many people do not, because they do not have to feel their pain. They have no idea how not only physically draining these diseases can be but also emotionally. It is not fair for them to have to pay for medical bills when they will eventually die when they can just end the suffering easily.

  • I think that people should have this choice. People don't deserve to be living in constant pain and fear of dying anyways so if they are okay with the idea and are at peace with it then they should get the choice. I think every state should legalize the law because it is each person's choice if they want that to happen and no law should restrict them from doing what they want. Honestly I would be sad if I were her parents but I would understand that she had been through a lot and there was no curing this disease. She put up a long fight and she should get to decide what she wants to do with her life. I think I would do the same thing if I were Brittany. I wouldn't want to live in constant pain.
