Dallas man kills bugler and goes back to sleep.

A 72 year old man, named James Meyer, was awakened early Thursday morning by a noise in his backyard. He went outside to investigate he finds a man trying to break into his shed using a pickaxe. He yelled at the man to stop and not come any closer or he would shoot. The man started to advance so Meyer shot the man, the robber ran away and dropped his weapon. Meyer said that he then fired a second shot into the night, as another warning shot. He then proceeded to go back to bed, without calling the police. Almost 2 hours after the incident and after Meyer's wife called their attorney did they finally call the police. Meyer wasn't cooperative with the dispatcher and when the cops arrived he said he threw the shell casings away. Late Thyrsday he was charged with murder and his bail was set on Friday for $150,000.

  1. Do you think that you would be able to shoot someone breaking into your home?

I don't think that I could ever shoot anyone, even if they were robbing me, I would call the police and get a weapon to defend myself if but I wouldn't use it unless I was extremely threatened.

  1. Do you think that he should have been charged with murder?

I do, because he didn't call the police and he was the one in control because he had a gun rather than a pickaxe. And he didn't report it immediately, which is extremely important especially if the man could have been saved if he had called.

  • Well done overall Peyton! Be sure to capitalize key words in your title and also ask a follow up question when asking yes/no questions.

  • Yes! It is self-defense of course I would be able I am not going to die like that.

Nope! He stood his ground and fired warning shots and was obviously tired I know I would be. He probably had to work all day and he didn't think murder was applied.

  • I do think that is anyone is breaking into YOUR own home that it should be ok to shoot them. They are being ignorant and are trespassing. I don't think that the old man should be charged with murder because he was just protecting his home and his belongings.

  • It depends on what it all comes down to, yes I would shoot someone who breaks into my house, beacuse they could be breaking in to eiher hurt my family or steal from me so, yeah I'm going to shoot they. I wouldn't shoot to kill though. I would shoot just enough to stop them. If I feel threatened I wouldn't even hesatate. Yes, I think that Meyer should have been charged for murger because he didn't report it right away. If Meyer were to have reported it sooner, or as soon as it happened, he probably wouldn't have been charged.

  • I dont think I would shoot someone if they came into my house most likely just call the police, but if it ever came to that just in the foot or something not to kill. I think it depends on how the court looks at it because he did kill a man but that man was trying to break into his shed and he did say if you come closer ill shoot even though he could have called the police.

  • I don't think I would be able to shoot someone because I would feel like a terrible person and would never think of doing that type of thing and I certanly wouldn't be able to go back to bed after it knowing I just shot someone. I don't think he should because it is self defense for someone breaking into his home.

  • I don't think I could ever shoot someone and still feel like a good person. I think maybe if there was an active shooter who was shooting people and I got the chance to kill him, I would. However I could not shoot someone for breaking into my house.

I agree, I do think he should be charged with murder becasue it is kind of suspicious that he didn't report the incident right away. Also, if something like that were to happen the police need to be involved and know what happened.

  • I disagree with you if someone breaks into your house or tries to i think you have all rights to defend your home.

Should he call the cops yes did he no but now the man has to go to jail for defending his home and his he were to wait for the cops to come the burgler could have gotten away.

  • 1. I do not think I would actually be able to shoot someone breaking into my home. Unless they were physically coming at me to harm me, I would not pull out a gun. I agree with your answer, to just grab another weapon that you could maybe knock them out with.

    2. I am not so sure about this second question. While the man was breaking and entering on his property and then started to advance to Meyer, it makes sense to me that he shot the man as self defense. However, the fact that Meyer didn't call the police immediately after is extremely dumb on his part, and he should receive some form of a punishment, whether that be jail-time or a hefty fine.

  • Do you think that you would be able to shoot someone breaking into your home?

I would shoot to the rubber if tries to harm me or anyone else, but after i will call cops

Do you think that he should have been charged with murder?

He is 72 years old man. Maybe he accepts everything not as he did when he was yong, and if he is mentally health the law is equal for everyone.
