This week's learning opportunity will be about President Trump's "Zero Tolerance" policy in regards to illegal immigration.
Watch the video here and then share your thoughts/opinons below in the comment section.
Other things to do:
--I will leave the last two weeks learning opportunities open. Feel free to read and reply to them as well. They are still on the message board.
--I will allow CWI/USH students to add their own current event stories they would like to discuss on the forum. Since I can't grade anything, all personal comments will not count towards your official froum post count during this time. I think it's important to keep up with the events of the world.
--Practice the Asian maps. The test will be about four days after we come back
--Feel free to take advantage of the extra credit opportunities I allow for(30 point max per quarter). I officially can't accept extra credit during the break, but you can stockpile them for when you come back. And if we don't come back, keep it for next year in US/World History(if you have me).
--I am available via email pretty much all day, including weekends. I will also be available in the chat room on my website whenever I am on my website. Feel free to ask questions there as well.

It's strange to hear that democrats and republicans were beginning to compromise on what's considered such a controversial issue nowadays, but ultimately, they didn't reach an agreement because of fights and a plan to ruin the agreement. It hurts me to hear people speak so harshly against immigrants, especially dreamers. Dreamers had no say in their migration into the country, and by acting rude and forcing them to leave, it feels as though politicians are trying to make them pay for a decision their parents made. Their parents made the choice to immigrate here, and while this can cause some problems for the U.S., it's important to remember that they are people too. While I understand that we cannot take in all immigrants and that there definitely are some immigrants who are not good people, it seems very inhumane to completely ban all immigrants under the idea that they are are rapists, terrorists, criminals, etc. There are definitely some great, intelligent, and kindhearted people who want to immigrate into the U.S. but are unable because of the prejudice and laws that disallow them. I think that they should be able to immigrate legally into the U.S. in order to pursue a better life. However, I understand that there are a lot of problems that come along with immigration, but I feel as though the way that Trump is handling the problems is spewing hatred and creating discontent between democrats, republicans, and even foreign powers. Trump states that the immigrants are terrible people and terrorists who are going to do nothing but wreak havoc on our country. However, by expressing these thoughts, he is just using his platform as president to create more racial and religious prejudice against immigrants who just want a better life that they believe the U.S. will offer. There is a fine line between being practical as to who is let into the country and being racist/coldhearted against people who have not harmed the U.S. in any way, and I hope that one day our government will reach a fair compromise for all on the subject of immigration.
I think it is important to separate legal immigration from illegal immigration. For mnay people, it has been joined so some people thing President Trump hates all immigrants. That just is not true. He is almost always talking about illegal immigration when he has used unkind words.
I think fixing the legal immigration system is what needs to happen. It can take up to 20 years for people to be able to immigrate to the US legally depending on what country you come from.
Thanks for your comments Ellie!
I think that this just shows how screwed up politics are. When Democrats and Republicans are finally starting to find common ground on a topic (like immigration) someone has to skew everyone away from the compromise. That stops good things from happening. The immigration issue is such a confusing situation. When I saw all of the kids being separated from their parents it made me really sad. However when I saw tons of people sneaking into the country illegally it made me feel like they were taking advantange of a sad situation. I don't know what America should do about illegal immigration, but I hope that political leaders can compromise to come up with the best possible way to solve it.
Immigration is one of the toughest issues to discuss in our country today. I think President Trump really wanted a deal but some of his more conservative advisors didn't want it ended up not happening. I agree that I hope something can get done as it is a sad and dangerous situation.
