Crash Caused By Maintenance Workers

Over the weekend on Sunday, an Amtrak passenger train collided with a large piece of railway equipment. This happened near Philadelphia causing two deaths and dozens injured. The maintenance workers were supposed to be working on a separate, closed down train track, but were mistakenly set up on a live track. The Amtrak Train 89, on its way to Savannah, Georgia, from New York. The train was transporting 330 passengers and crew when the collision happened.

Passengers on the train described what they felt when the collision occurred. One passenger, Steve Forbes, described the crash like this, "It was a matter of nanoseconds, but you felt the train was coming to a screeching halt, then it eased up a bit, then another screech," described Forbes. "There was coffee flying everywhere. There was the small of smoke."

Questions

1. How would you feel if you were a passenger?

2. Whose fault do you think the crash is?

Opinion- If I was a passenger, I would be very nervous and scared because I wouldn't know if there was a fire or something worse. I would be scared because I don't know if others have died or is there was no help. I think that it is the maintenance crew's fault for being on the wrong tracks and they are lucky that there were only a few deaths.

  • Good job!

  • I would probably freak me out when it happened. It would not stop me from riding on trains. It is the maintenance work fault he shouldn't of been there.

  • If I were a passenger, I would never buy a train ticket again. There is always a great risk of things going wrong when you travel on trains and airplanes or other fast transportation, but again, it's quicker and more efficient than driving.

  • If I would be an passenger I would be scared until I know whats wrong. In my opinion it is the workers fault for being on the wrong tracks and they should have payed more attention on their work

    • I feel the same way about being scared because of not knowing what is wrong or what will happen. If there is help how are you supposed to know or maybe something worse is happening and you have no idea. Also, if you don't know what caused the crash that can be pretty scary.

  • If I was a passenger I would be so scared. Just not knowing what happened or what was going on would be so terrifying. I think whoever set up the workers is who is at fault. In this job you cannot make little mistakes like that because it can end up being fatal.

    • I think that you are right when you said that it was the person who was in charge and told the maintenance workers where the were supposed to go's fault. I'm sure the workers just thought they were right where they were supposed to be and never thought that this kind of an accident could happen.

  • I would be very concerned if I was a passenger on this train. I would feel as though I wasn't in a safe place. I don't think it is particularly anyone's fault, it was an honest mistake. The workers, however should have paid more attention to their job. If they had done this, the wreck could have been avoided

    • I agree and I also would be very concerned. With this crash happening I don't know if I could trust the company again. I think you are right in that the accident could have been avoided if the crew had paid more attention and double checked to see if they were in the right area.
