Covid Killed Malls, Now it is buying them

Malls that buckled due to e-commerce or suffered during the pandemic are being given new life by the very entity that precipitated their decline. Over the last several months, Amazon has gone on a shopping spree of its own, buying up disused malls across the country and turning them into distribution centers. “The reality is that the cash flow at these lower-quality malls is declining rapidly,” said Vince Tibone, lead retail and industrial analyst at the real estate analytics firm Green Street. “You have to decide, 'Do I want to do something myself to invest a lot of money to transform this dead retail into thriving retail or put up offices?’ Selling a dead mall as land is a more attractive option.

I think that Amazon needs to take it easy on buying all of these malls because then I believe that someday there won't be anymore malls left to go too. About 50 percent of mall-based department stores could permanently close by the end of 2021, according to Green Street. The majority of these mall closures are expected to be lower-tier shopping centers that make less than $320 per square foot of space, which makes it difficult to cover their mortgages.

The pandemic has only accelerated Amazon’s retail business, as stores closed and people hunkered down at home to curb coronavirus infections. Today things are starting to open up so that is good for malls and other businesses. Recently I have been to malls in Omaha and I would say they are booming. There are always tons of people there although there are often lines at each store. If malls don't start to make there money back then they would eventually become extinct.

Do you think Amazon will take over all the malls?

If so, when?

  • I think Amazon is slowly becoming a monopoly and we should become more aware of its doings. I mean buying out malls and closing them or setting them up for their priviledges is slowly turning them into a monopoly.

  • I think that Amazon is taking over a bunch of places but I don't really think that it'll get to the point where they take control over all of them. However, they are an extremely fast-growing business so it could happen. I just don't think that some businesses would sell to them because then they would control a lot more.

  • I think that Amazon is getting to the point of taking over many businesses but malls will take awhile just because people like to do in person shopping.  I think that this will take a longer time but online shopping will probably take over all other forms of shopping.

  • Although I think that Amazo might gey control on many malls I don't think that it will take over all of them, since the situation is getting better less malls will have to close ad they will start earning again as they did before the pandemic. Online shopping might cause some people to stop going to the mall but it's still something that many enjoy doing.

  • There is definitly a chance of amazon taking the malls over, but I find it highly unlikely. Things are starting to open up, slowly which means more people will be going back to malls and doing the normal things they do. As things start to go back to normal, the malls should start getting their business back to normal, too.

  • At the rate malls are closing at and if Amazon keeps buying them then yes I do think they will toake over all malls and I hope that won't happen because then that means millions of people will lose their jobs. I think that they will take over all malls buy the end of 2022 if all malls close and covid is still big as it is.

  • I think that there is a chance of amazon taking over the malls but I dont think that will happan I think that the wall will open soon and then they will be fine and make money so they dont have to shut down.

  • I think since all the malls are opening up more people will start to go because their tired of staying home. The malls will start to get more business and will start to make more money in order to pay their mortgages. I don't think all malls with get bought out, because people like going to them and spending more time with family and don't want to stayh at home and buy something off the internet.

  • I don't think Amazon will buy all the malls because there are some malls that have stores in them that get a lot of business and that won't go bankrupt. I think Amazon is trying to expand their business because it is becoming very popular and they could probably use more space.
