Couple Withholding $400,000 Belonging to Homeless Man

10 months ago a GoFundMe page was put together for a homeless man, Johnny Bobbitt. The couple started the money raising campaign after Bobbitt gave Kate McClure his last $20 after she ran out of gas. But the relationship between the couple and Bobbitt was short lived. The couple is currently withholding $400,000 from 14,000+ doners. Although Bobbitt's lawyer claims there's only about $150,000 left. Bobbitts attorney claims "she's "very concerned" that much of the money will be gone by the time it's accounted for."

The couple has admitted to spending $500 at a casino, but claims they payed that money back with money that the won. The couple also claimed tha they gave Bobbitt $25,000 of it but, he spent it within a week. The couples reasoning for not giving Bobbitt the money is he alledgedly has a drug problem.

Questions:

Do you think the couple is justified in holding back the funds?

I do not think that they are right to not give him every penny that they've raised for him. The article doesn't mention anything about actually verifying if this drug problem is legit, I think they could make more of an effort in that area. Maybe even use some of the money to pay for as much rehab and treatment that he needs.

How would you feel if you were in Bobbitts situation?

I belive that if I did have a drug problem etc. Then that would make sense. But I think it's unfair of them to be doing this. I wouldn't undertsand why they would even raise all of this money for me just to withold it.

  • Good topic choice and good summary! You started the week off very well with your replies but then stop. Be sure to comment throughout the week next time.

  • I don't think that they should give him the money because if he is on drugs he could be using the money to just buy drugs. I think that if I was Bobbitts then I would understand why they wouldn't give me the money and I would get off of the drugs.

  • I think that they should pay for Bobbitt's rehab and if he can't manage to get clean, then they should refund or ask the donators what they want done with their money.

  • I think they are justified by half yes they are holding the money back for a good reason and no because they shouldnt spend the money they are fundraising. I agree with paying for his rehab and treatment. if i was in bobbitts place I think they soud pay for my rehab and treatment what was the money for if the are just spending it at the casino.

  • I believe that the couple should have gave all the money that they raised for the homeless man, they should not keep the money for themselves and especially should not spend any of it, even if they were going to pay the money back. I think the homeless man has a lrgitament reason to fight this couple in cour and get every penny that was raised for him.

  • I don't think the coupe has the right to keep the money for themselves, people donated money to the homeless man and not to the couple. The people donating wanted to help out the homeless amn not give their money to a couple, it is not for them to keep. I think that it wouldn't be fair of them and I wouldn't be very happy about them taking money that does not belong to them.

  • I do not think that the couple has a legit reason that they could not have given him that money. They started the page to raise money for him, not to keep for themselves. If I was in his position I would be very upset. Even if I had a drug problem I could have used that money to get help, and get myself in a better position to support myself. I agree with you that I do not understand why they would raise all that money "for him" just to keep it.

  • I dont think that it is right that they kept the money because its not rightfully theirs. I think they should give the man all the money becuase people donated it for him and not the peoples. If I was bobbitt i would be very mad that they kept it and proboaly a bit dissiopinted and sad.

  • I think that the couple is and is not justified in holding back the funds. The reason I think this is because I think that  the homeless' acts was the most generous thing to do, to give his last twenty dollars to the lady to get gas. I also think that it was way out of generousity for the couple to start a fund. I bet they didn't think it would get that high, but I also think that the homeless man should have used the money more wisely. If anyone was given that amount of money, 25,000 dollars, I don't think they would spend it that fast. And since the homeless man spent it that fast, I think he is over using it and is not spending is wisely. If it were true that he was using the money for drugs, then I fully 100 percent support that the couples can STOP giving him money. I think it just spends how much time he spent it, how he spent it, and what he spent it with matters.

  • I don't think they are justified in holding back the money. Bobbitt gave Kate Mclure $20 for gas. They created the page basically to give back to him for helping her. I think the couple is just making excuses as to why they shouldn't give this homeless guy the money. The couple probably didn't realise that they were going to raise this much for a homeless man, and so now they just want to keep it and make excuses up of why they shouldn't give him the money.
