The longest government shutdown is now at 31 days, and the cost is about to exceed the money President Donald Trump has asked for his border wall. The current cost is estimated around $1.2 billion per week. This Monday started the fifth week of the shutdown. By the end of the week, the total cost to the economy will be estimated around $6 billion. Hundreds of thousands of furloughed workers have not been payed since the start of the government shutdown. Other federal workers have always been payed when the government reopened. Since many of them will get payedonce the government opens, they stick to working without pay. Some of the smaller businesses that rely on the tourism from national parks and landmarks are struggling because the parks are closed. Together, thousands of small businesses that have contracts with the government are losing around $200 million a day.

1. What is your opinion on the goverment shutdown and border wall?

I'm for the border wall because it could prevent some of the drugs and crime coming into the country. Since the country is about to lose more money than it would have cost to build the wall.

2. If you were a furloughed worker or a worker without pay, when would you decide to quit the job.

I would probably quit when I ran out of money to pay for my family because there is no knowing how long it will stay shutdown.

  • Well done Michael!

  • I think that it's ridiculous and selfish that the government is shutdown because of a border wall that Trump wants to build. However, I can understand what he wants from his perspective, it would keep drug lords and other criminals of that sort out. I would quit my job if I was running low on cash, then I would get a different job that doesn't have a contract with the government.

  • 1) In my opinion I think that the wall would do nothing because people have their ways of sneaking things in, with or without a wall, it would just be a waste of money, and now its not even about the benefits of the wall, its just Trump wanting what he wants now.

    2) I would probably look for a new job, but I think that government workers should get paid still

  • 2 - If I was a government worker that wasn't working or getting paid, at this point I would look for a new job, The people that are in this situation can't just spend the money they don't have to live, they relied on their jobs and Trump isn't really taking that into account, in my opinion.

  • 1 - I think that it all is sort of pointless. It is just a battle between the two political parties at this point. I think that the wall is also pointless. What is it going to help? How much can a wall really stop at this point?

  • I like the idea of the border wall because I believe it will stop illegal drugs from entering our country. Since there will be less drugs there will also be less crime plus the wall is what I believe to be the only thing that will stop the shutdown. How long I worked would depend on if I had a spouse who could support our family while I was furloughed. However if I wasn't married I would've quit.

    • I agree that them letting the wall go up is one of the only ways that the shutdown will end but neither side seems to be backing down so they either have to come to a agreement or families are going to suffer more.

  • I belive there are pros and cons to putting up the wall, but Gov't workers should not be held "hostage". Both sides have shifted the blame and continue to do nothing eventhough the say they "care" about the furloughed workers. They truly dont care about people making $40,000-$50,000 per year because most of them are billionaires or millionaires.

My dad works for the USDA and is currently furloughed. Since the Gov't has been shutdown for so long he had to go back last week to finish any unfinished buisness from 2018.

    • I agree that they both have siad that they care about the furloughed workers but have'nt doen much to actually show bu the wall would be a good thing to keep illegal things from entering the country.

  • I definetly think there are pros to putting up the wall but if the democrats and republicans do not come to an agrement on putting it up I would just say to find another thing to do like increase security if possible, because it is already costing so much just becasue of the shutdown. If I was a worker without pay I would keep working for at least a little while in hope that the governernment will open back up and I will get payed, but if I were to start to get to low on money and it doeasn't seem like it will open back up any time soon, I would for sure try and find a new job.
