The New York police have had to bring charges out against an "emotionally disturbed" man who triggered a police shooting near Times Square, wounding several bystanders. The officers were forced to fire three shots at 35-year-old Glenn Broadnax on Saturday night in the well-known tourist district, hitting two women on a nearby corner in the midst, a police statement said Sunday.
"Broadnax was walking into traffic in front of the Port Authority bus terminal, apparently trying to be hit by cars," Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said.
He dodged the police who attempted to take him into custody, and then mimicked shoot a gun at officers, then mimicked shooting a gun at officers, prompting the officers to return fire with real bullets, Kelly said.
"At some time he reached into his pocket, took out his hand and simulated as if he was shooting at them," Kelly told reporters late Saturday.
Two officers fired three shots before the unarmed Broadnax was brought down with a Taser. He has been charged with menacing, obstructing governmental administration, riot, criminal possession of a controlled substance, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct, the NYPD said in a statement issued Sunday morning. Those charges may change once he goes to court, however. A 54-year-old woman was shot in the knee, police said. The woman with the knee wound was listed in stable condition.
Why do you think was his motive behind this? Do you think the charges pressed against him are acceptable?

i'm guessing this guy was on drugs or mentally unstable for him to do what he did. As for the police I think they should have been a little more cautious when firing on the man with bystanders in the background.
Yes people were trying to save his life and ignored the law. Resistance of arrest is not a very smart thing to do but the thing that got me i that when he reached into his pocket did he want them to think he was grabbing a gun and wanted them to kill him?
Hm, a lot of people have been thinking that, as well. But I agree. The civilians shouldn't have to pay for medical bills that could have been easily avoided by police.
even if he is "emotionally disturbed" that gives the Police no right to shoot him because people can get shot that don't deserve it. he needed more training because by the sound of it.
It does sound that way, doesn't it? Broadnax was even unarmed, and they still shot.. They acted a bit excessively, when looking at the actual situation.
They really didn't need to shoot him. The police could have handled it different considering they were near Times Square which is a major tourism location. That just surprises me that the police in New York would handle a situation like this.
I agree. It makes me wonder why they shot as quickly as they did, and with so many rounds in such a populated area. They could have gone about the situation in a much better way, most definitely.
Maybe the man was under the influence. I think that the charges he is getting are very acceptable. In the process of the police worrying about him, a few others were harmed in the process, instead. I hope he feels bad about his actions.
He could have been, but the article didn't state anything of the kind. Considering they actually brought him down, I believe they could figure out what his problems were after bringing him into custody. Right now, it doesn't seem like a likely cause to me, but I could be wrong. Other than that, I agree.
