Cop donates Kidney to 8 year old boy

Kristi Goll posted on Facebook that her 8 year old son Jackson Arneson needed a living kidney donor, with type O positive blood, and as many matching antigens as possible to survive. Family members checked to see if they were the right match but none of them were, so she turned to Facebook. People contacted her and tested their blood. After a month on social media no one had the right match. Officer Lindsey Bittorf, who doesn't even know who they are, saw the post and immediately tested her blood. Bittorf spent a whole day getting her blood drawn, scans, and psychological consultations to make sure she was the perfect match. Bittorf got good news back, she was a perfect match for him. Her blood was type O positive and she had 3 out of 6 of the same antigens, which is very uncommon. Doctors looked at her blood type but also her antigens to see how high a risk Jackson had of his body rejecting Bittorf's kidney. Bittorf showed up to their house and surprised them with the good news. When they answered the door she said, "I took an oath to serve and protect my community and now my kidney will serve and protect you." On June 22 they both had surgery right next door to each other. Both surgeries went well and Bittorf and Kristi communicate every day whether it's through phone or person to person.

Questions

1. Would you donate a kidney to someone? Why or Why not

2. How would you feel if you needed a kidney and some random person donated their's to you?

If it was one of my family members than maybe I would but I think it would be hard to give up one of your kidneys, knowing the risks of what it could cause for you to only have one kidmey. I would feel very grateful and happy that someone out there is caring enough to give up one of their kidneys for me.

    • Yeah, if I was a match, now that I think of it I may do it for anyone if they needed one really bad.

  • Yes because you get the opportunity to change someone's life and probably for the better. They may learn from the kindness you showed them and someday donate one of their organs, blood, bone marrow or tissue because of you! I would get very emotional and probably shed a tear or two. It would feel so great to know that someone cares and because of that you get a second chance.

    • You would feel so proud of yourself for donating one of your organs and like you said they now get a second chance at life because you gave one of your organs to them.

  • Yes I would. If I was healthy enough and the perfect match then there would be no doubt about it. I'm sure it would be hard to do, but in the end it would all pay off. If this happened to me, I would feel so grateful. I would thank them with all my heart. I would try to stay in contact with them because I think that would be a very awesome thing that someone could do.

    • I agree it would be really hard but it would make you feel so good after you did it.

  • I would donate my kidney to my family first but then if there was someone who really needed it, like I kid, I would consider donating one. You can survive with one kidney. You would just have to make sure that your other kidney will be able to survive. I would be beyond grateful if someone were to donate a kidney, or any organ, to me. There are thousands of people who are put on the organ donation list everyday, and many of them don't get the organ in time.

    • Yes, I would for sure do it for my family members first. Especially if it was a kid then I for sure would donate it.

  • I don't think I would donate my kidney to just anyone, but maybe if it was a close family member or friend. I might consider that. I would feel thankful, but maybe a bit sketched out..like what if they did drugs and were trying to hurt me on purpose?

    • I agree but then I also don't because if they needed a kidney I don't think they would ask for a kidney from a living person.
