Concentration Camp Being Turned Into A Resort?

There have been many concentration camps turned into memorials, but there has never been one turned into a luxury resort. This former camp is located on Adriatic island of Mamula. This island is barely visible on a map, with a diameter of 200 meters. The concentration camp used to hold around 2,300 people, 130 which were killed or starved to death. 16.3 million dollars will be spent transforming this former concentration camp into a resort with swimming pools, spas, restaurant, a dance floor and even a yacht marina.

1.   Do you think that it is a good idea to make this transformation?

2.   Would you want to stay at this resort knowing that it was once a concentration camp?

They are spending a lot of money to make this transformation, but I don't know how successful it will be. It looks like a beautiful place and they have big plans on making this luxurious, but  I wouldn't want to stay in a place that was once a concentration camp.

  • Well done overall but you could have replied to a few more students.

  • I think that it's disrespectful to the people that were held at this camp. People died and yet it's being turned into a resort for people to relax. I would definitely not want to stay in a resort that used to be a concentration camp, the thought is kind of sickening.

  • I see what there trying to do making a terrible place into a nice place, but it could be taken as disrespectful to the people who were imprisoned there. Some may like the idea of turning something that had a horrible past into something that can relax people.

I would at least stay there once It would be even better if they had a memorial center in the resort to pay your respects.

  • This transformation is a really terrible and stupid idea. This is really disrespectful to the people that suffered and died there. I think that this new resort will not be successful and will not be able to stay open for very long. Think about 2,300 people that stood on that ground and the ones that may be buried under neath it. I would never stay there knowing what happened.

  • I don't think this transformation is a good idea because of the past of the island. If you were told you're staying at the location of an old concentration camp I don't think that will set easy with you. I wouldn't want to stay at a resort that is built over an old concentration camp, no matter how nice the resort is. It just feels wrong to turn a terrible thing into a hotel instead of a memorial.

  • No... I think it's really disrespectful to the people who suffered there. Our society builds malls, resorts, etc. on top of those types of places so we forget where we're standing - and in this case, we'd be standing on the ground where 2,300 people suffered and where some probably still lay. If we build this resort, we forget those who died there.

Not particularly. Again, I just wouldn't want to disrespect people who lived a much harder life than I did. I wouldn't be crazily opposed to it if there would be a memorandum for those people somewhere in the resort, but your description of it doesn't make it sound like there will be.

  • No, I think the thought was cool, but no one is really going to want to stay here. It is weird, and in a way disrespectful. No, I would not because I would be thinking about what it used to be and what used to happen there.

    • If I stayed there and wasn't told that it was once a concentration camp, I would never thought of it. It is a good idea to transform the entire island into a luxury resort, but the fact that it was once a concentration camp ruins the entire thought to me.

  • I think making places like this is a good idea so people can have another option for places to go, but I don't think it is a good idea to build it on the site of where a concentration camp used to be. I don't think it is respectful to build a resort on this place because it should be a memorial, and I probably wouldn't vacation to it.

  • I don't think the idea is something that should be frowned upon. It's a way to make something old with bad memories into something new that can create good memories. I don't know if it would be my first place to vacation, but I would not exclude it because it was a concentration camp. I think it could be an attraction to the island, especially if they incorporate some of it's history into the resort.
