Clock changes: EU backs ending daylight saving time

In the European Union, which consists of 28 countries including the United Kingdom, Germany, and Italy, daylight savings time happens between winter and summer. According to Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker, millions of people “believe that in the future, summer time should be year-round, and that’s what will happen.” In order to make this proposal a law, 28 nation governments and MEPs must support the idea. The survey that led to this proposal shows that most Europeans opposed daylight savings time. According to this survey, 84% of the 4.6 million people who responded supported the end of daylight savings time. The studies behind daylight savings time say that it can be detrimental to some people's sleeping habits and their productivity at work.

How do you think the people who live in countries that are a part of the EU will be affected by this decision if it goes through?

Would you support an end to daylight savings time in the US?

  • Great job overall! Be sure to include your personal thoughts/opinions within your summary next time.

  • I support getting rid of it because I think that it could make some people happier. Getting up an hour earlier than usual isn't fun. People who get up at 6 would be getting up at five. Farmers can set their alarm clocks earlier, or jobs can change their hours if it really was impacted that badly. It'd keep schedules more consistant for the people who don't need it.

    • I agree that some people would be happier without daylight savings time and that losing an hour of sleep is not fun. And I do know that farmers could wake up earlier, but I don't know if that is fair to them as they would have to vary their schedules based on the time the sun is coming up instead of consistently waking up at one time for half the year and another for the next.

    • I think you're right that daylight savings time is beneficial to Americans. This is especially helpful to farmers as you said. It makes sense to me too that workers in the EU would be affected because daylight savings time has been said to be harmful to work productivity.

  • I think I would support an end daylight savings time in the US because I think overall, people would be happy. I know not everyone would agree to this, but most descions are the popular vote. So, I think the majority would pick the daylight saying to change. I also think that it would help people, maybe the elderly, because then they wouldn't have some seasons they can't stand, live life with. I think overall it would be eaiser and better in the long run.

    • I do agree that a lot of Americans would probably support the end of daylight savings time because 84% of the Europeans did, but I'm really not sure. I do see your point that it would be more convenient in the long run, but I don't understand how the end of daylight savings time would help the elderly with the seasons.

  • I think that the people of the EU wont be affected a huge amount other than they wont have that one weekend a year where their bodies are confuesed about what time it is, mentally however I think the people will be happier in the end.

I would support ending daylight savings time because other than making it seem dark sooner/later in the day daylight savings time really doesn't seem to have a purpose.

    • I agree that people's sleeping schedules probably wouldn't be affected largely, but I think you're overlooking the benefits of having more daylight during each day. I think it's important because it costs less electrically and gives farmers more daylight.

  • I think that the people won't be used to the time changes for some time. Changing this could also make many people in the area unhappy, but I can see both sides. I would probably be unhappy about this at first, but as time goes by I would support it more. As time goes by, the time change would be easier to understand.

    • I agree that it would be difficult to warm up to there being darker days. I also see how you wouldn't be happy about it at first- I wouldn't either. But, as you said, we would likely get used to it over time.
