Climate Change

Climate change has been quite a large topic for quite some time. There has been lot's of questions surrounding this topic. For example, "is it real?", "Is it caused by humans?", "how harmful could it be?", and "What can we do to stop it?". Rising global temperatures, warming oceans, and melting ice caps are all caused by global warming. Global warming is caused by increasing the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmoshpere. Greenhouse gases are like carbon dioxide which is mostly caused by humans. However, there are other harmful emissions that are not caused by humans, like methane gas which is released by cattle.

Now that Joe Biden is president, he has signed many executive orders that will start eco-friendly projects as well as focusing on reducing emissions. Some of these include the Paris Climate Agreement and the cancelation of the Keystone XL Pipeline. Although the cancelation of the Keystone XL Pipeline is good for the environment, It got rid of a lot of jobs and could hurt the economy. The Paris Climate Agreement rejoins the Paris Climate Accord. The Paris Climate Agreement works on a 5-year cycle of increasingly ambitious actions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Earth's average temperature has increased by 2 degrees Farhenheit during the 20th century. 2 degrees may not sound like a lot, but at the end of the last ice age, average temperatures were only 5 to 9 degrees cooler than today. Scientists from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change estimate a temperature rise 2.5 to 10 degrees over the next century. Those are some HUGE numbers. Climate change doesn't just change the temperature, it also causes more wildfires, droughts, and increases the number and intensity of tropical storms.

How harmful do you think climate change could be if we didn't do anything to stop it?

It would take a while, but it could reach a point where earth essentially becomes unliveable. The water levels would rise significantly, causing lots of flooding all around the world. Obviously, this would be very far into the future, so things would be very different. Perhaps space travel would be a good option, and we could migrate to a different planet. It is a lot like a post-apocalyptic sci-fi movie, but this is just theoretical.

What are some method that we could use to slow climate change?

I think electric cars help a lot, after all, there are over 1 billion cars in the world, that is a lot of carbon dioxide. If more people drive electric vehicles, it could significantly decrease our emissions.

  • It can be extremely harmful if we don't do anything to stop it. It may not affect us in our life time, but it will effect the next generation drastically and the other many years to come. We only have one Earth and most likely won't have anywhere else to inhabit if our planet becomes bad enough. A couple methods we could be using is decreasing out plastic use by recycling more. Using more biodegradable items such as bamboo toothbrushes or paper based shipping products. This will keep less garbage out of the ocean and landfills. It will also not harm the air from burning them unlike burning plastic trash.

  • Climate change is bound to happen, but I think if we did nothing about it, it would happen much faster. It still wouldn't be noticeably faster, but the average temp could probably rise every decade. To slow climate change, getting rid of fossil fuels would probably be a good start. Although many people like using fossil fuels and would rather use those than go electric, it is still damaging the atmosphere.

  • Although the change in climate might not affect those alive right now, it is bound to affect our children and grandchildren, animals in the wild, and many species of plants. Taking action right now to prevent any more climate change will hopefully positively impact our planet's future.

  • I think it will be harmful and it won't take a while since it's already affecting considerably cilmate in some parts of the world. I believe that everyone can in some way help a little, by taking the car only when it's the only choice you have or by shopping in places that care about the envoroment. At the same time in my opinion industries are the ones that need to invest in sustainable energy and the ones that should take this issue more seriously.

  • I think it will harmful in one way or another. Now it might not seem so bad, but eventually it could get out of hand. It's just a matter of acting sooner rather than later. And by doing so, we could see a change in the climate. Reducing carbon emissions is a big one that sticks out to me as it would be simple to change that. We would just have to change things to get more people to want to buy electric vehicles.

  • Biden has re-enter into the Paris Climate Agreement, and he has also stated that he is going to take action on global warming and actively try to help fix this devastation to our eco system. If we did absolutely nothing about climate change, I think our planet would be in bad shape in a few generations. We can't just leave it up to them to somehow fix it, so thats why we need to take action now.

  • i think it could be somewhat harmful but its ganna take a very long time and we will all be dead but if we dont try to stop it the earth wouldnt be the same and you might not be able to live on earth anymore. i also think that electric cars could help it alot because there are always cars being driven.

  • I don't really think climate change is that big of a deal; even if it was it will take a lot longer to have a big impact on us. I think that if we wanted to slow down climate change we could use electric cars more instead of using gas. However, even if we were to do this we wouldn't be able to function as well as a country without the use of gas.

    • We currently have higher carbon emissions than we ever have had before and they're continuing to rise, if we don't do something now we will have no other options, and massive, catastrophic damages will be done. I think that we need to stop ignoring this.

    • Climate change is a huge issue that needs to be addressed as a world. We are destroying the planet, faster than we all think. It already impacts people in big ways and if you can't see that then I guess that's your problem. The world could function just as well using electic cars instead of gas powered cars, it's not that hard to adjust to something like that.
