For people who live in Alaksa, ice is part of their everyday life but it may not be for much longer. Many tribes in Alaska have dropped words from their language because there is no longer ice that is described by them. An example of this is the "tagneghneq", which means thick, dark, weathered ice. Other tribes like the Shishmaref, Kivalina, and Newtok are moving father inland because their coastal land is starting to melt away, becoming too thin, and their barrier ice protection from sea storms are decreasing. I think we should find some way to help the people in Alaska to rebuild their homes after moving and help them keep their original tribal ways. Not only do towns need to be rebuilt but food needs to be found. The walrus that the tribes and their people have lived off for years are starting to decrease in numbers and are getting harder and harder to find.
Alaska is one of the 50 states, yet the government is doing nothing to help the Alaskan people. What do you think we could do to help?
How can tribal people protect themselves from storms that are no longer blocked out by barriers of sea ice?

Great job Jocelyn!
I think that we should at least try to give them the food and resources they need to survive. I also think that the tribal people can protect themselves from the storms by trying to create shelter with the resources they have or simply try to find a cave or hole.
I think we could help by building them new homes and villages closer inland. They can protect themselves from storms by moving to higher ground like in the mountains or shorelines that are much higher than the water. They could also build their houses out of stronger materials like concrete, and they could put their houses on poles just incase the water floods.
I don't think we can do a lot because we can't rebuild ice as you're suggesting. If they're living on ice it's not exactly like we can just put a new slab of ice in for them. Probably by building strong homes or moving away from them.
I think that laws need to be passed that disable large companies from using harmful fossil fuels. This will prevent further damage, but I think that the government should spend money on relocating the affected people and sending them help and supplies. I think that the people should protect themselves from storms by temporarily moving to somewhere safer.
YES!! That is a good idea about companies not being able to emit so much pollution in the air that harms our envirnment. But along with that, it isn't just our country that is causing global warming. If we want to see a real change in global warming, the whole world will have to work together to create a change.
I think the government could send supplies to help them and make it a little easier, but it's global warming that is casuing the melting. They could help move people more inland and give them house and shelter. Tribal people can protect themselves from storms that are no longer blocked by moving inland and building houses and shelters.
Either the government or an individual organization could send supplies to help build the Alaskan's new houses or supplies to build a wall to protect them from ice storms. The money from the organization could also help support them with food until more walrus come back around, which will hopefully happen.
I think we could easily start an organization that could help collect money and supplies that the Alaskan people need to rebuild their homes. I think its disappointing that the government has yet to do anything in order to help them. Since it is part of the United States, I think it just as important to take care of Alaska as others states in need of resources. Right now they don't have any other way of protection from the storms since the ice barriers are gone so, they will need to continue moving their communities inland.
Yes an organization would be a great idea to help them make money because the government hasn't done anything yet nor do I think they will anytime soon. Free will donations for the Alaskan people and their homes and food is a good idea to help them!
