Climate Change

Climate change has been quite a large topic for quite some time. There has been lot's of questions surrounding this topic. For example, "is it real?", "Is it caused by humans?", "how harmful could it be?", and "What can we do to stop it?". Rising global temperatures, warming oceans, and melting ice caps are all caused by global warming. Global warming is caused by increasing the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmoshpere. Greenhouse gases are like carbon dioxide which is mostly caused by humans. However, there are other harmful emissions that are not caused by humans, like methane gas which is released by cattle.

Now that Joe Biden is president, he has signed many executive orders that will start eco-friendly projects as well as focusing on reducing emissions. Some of these include the Paris Climate Agreement and the cancelation of the Keystone XL Pipeline. Although the cancelation of the Keystone XL Pipeline is good for the environment, It got rid of a lot of jobs and could hurt the economy. The Paris Climate Agreement rejoins the Paris Climate Accord. The Paris Climate Agreement works on a 5-year cycle of increasingly ambitious actions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Earth's average temperature has increased by 2 degrees Farhenheit during the 20th century. 2 degrees may not sound like a lot, but at the end of the last ice age, average temperatures were only 5 to 9 degrees cooler than today. Scientists from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change estimate a temperature rise 2.5 to 10 degrees over the next century. Those are some HUGE numbers. Climate change doesn't just change the temperature, it also causes more wildfires, droughts, and increases the number and intensity of tropical storms.

How harmful do you think climate change could be if we didn't do anything to stop it?

It would take a while, but it could reach a point where earth essentially becomes unliveable. The water levels would rise significantly, causing lots of flooding all around the world. Obviously, this would be very far into the future, so things would be very different. Perhaps space travel would be a good option, and we could migrate to a different planet. It is a lot like a post-apocalyptic sci-fi movie, but this is just theoretical.

What are some method that we could use to slow climate change?

I think electric cars help a lot, after all, there are over 1 billion cars in the world, that is a lot of carbon dioxide. If more people drive electric vehicles, it could significantly decrease our emissions.

  • Good topic choice and good summary Ian! You started off commenting and then stopped. Be sure to contnue replying the entire week.

  • I do not think that climate change is a big a deal as the media says it is. Over the course of history it has been seen there are periods of time where it is hot and the sea levels rise. There are also periods of time that it cold and the oceans are frozen. I think that humans are playing a very small role in this and it just how the earth works.

  • I think that climate change is not hitting us that bad and it is a natural thing in the world with or without humans and the impact that humans have on it is not huge.  I think there isn't anything we can do because it is a natural thing that happens in the world either way.

  • I think that climate change does not hit or affect us as it does many other but at times it can. And when you said it can possibly get so bad that the world could be unlivable, I don't see that happening anytime soon but the day it does I will probably be dead and it will more than likley be my kids, kids problem but this topic definetly needs more scientific reasearch.

  • I think climte change is very real and should be stopped as soon as possible. I mean even in Iowa we face some of its consequences. This weekend is supposed to be -7 degrees which has to be influenced by climate change. That temperature is just way too low to be normal. It is also getting worse year by year.

  • Honestly if we dont stop climate changei think the world will slowly burn to be honest. I dont know why i think this but it seems about right, I dont mind climate change because it isnt really affecting me at the moment. But to others its a big problem.

  • A method to stop climate change is stop green house gases. Alot of the animals living in different climates like the polar  bears are dying because of global warming. Alot of people dont like climate change but yet they still polute the air just as much as everyone else in the world and they do nothing about it.

  • If we don't do anything about the climate change I agree that things could bad. But I also think that climate change has been a big thing for a long time and I don't think that has changed much to were the whole world has changed.

  •  If we don't do anything about climate change it could be bad really bad or it could be just like it is right now. If we can make everything electric it would make everything in the world a lot smoother and we don't use fossil fuels for cars trains boats and whatever and we switch to electric.

  • I agree with what you said about how it could reach a certain point where Earth is unliveable. But I don't think that will happen in our lifetime but we definetly need to do things to stop or slow it down. I also agree with using electric cars to slow climate change because gas powered cars are one of the top providers of carbon dioxide.
