Cleaning With Oysters

On the shores of New York, the filthy water has become a major problem over the last few years. Because of this, the billion oyster project(BOP) was created. The BOP is partnered with 70 other restaurants around New York. The restaurants save their oyster shells and donate them to research schools associated with the BOP. The students at the schools make and grow baby oysters in the empty shells. Then, when the oysters are large enough, they are taken out to the shore on the New York Coast. Oysters are used for cleaning because they are natural purifiers. In fact, approxiamately 1 oyster cleans 50 gallons of water in a day, and there are millions of oysters all over the shore which means that a bunch of water is cleaned each day. They don't just clean the water though, they make barriers to protect the shore from stormy water and protect the animals living in the water. There still aren't as many oysters as the BOP would like, but they are making a huge difference-one oyster at a time. They even think that cleaning the water with oysters will make a positive difference in climate change.

Q: In what way do you think the oysters will affect climate change?

A: I think that climate change will be affected positively in the future. With cleaner water, the animals are more protected from dying from chemicals or plastic. The towns and cities near the shore in New York are even safer because the oysters make a barrier against the strong current.

Q: If you got a job cleaning the New York shores, how would you go about doing it?

A: I would try to clean the water and get rid of the plastic first because I don't think the oysters are able to get the plastic out. After cleaning the plastic out, I would put the oysters in the water to get the rest of the chemicals and filth out.  I would then continue monitoring and checking up on the oysters.

  • Well done!

  • I think the oysters won't necessarily stop climate change, but will make the effects less severe. Since getting rid of the pollution will stop climate change partially, it could make a positive effect by starting with trying to fix the filthy ocean coasts. I would use the oysters like they did in the project and try to get out information about how we are damaging the ocean. I would raise awareness for how lots of air pollution from cars and such make the ocean absorb more and more carbon dioxide which makes it more acidic so some species of underwater organisms don't survive well, like the oysters that clean it.

    • I agree, the oysters aren't big enough to completely destroy climate change, but they are strong enough to play a big part in cleaning the shores. I think that this is a step in the right direction, if New York is the first state to use oysters, then the word will get out and soon a lot of people will be using oysters to clean the water which will be great!

  • I think that oysters could possibly affect climate change in a positive way by cleaning the polluted water which protects many other marine animals. I would try to get rid of as much plastic as I could because oysters cannot purify or clean up the plastic in the shores.

    • I agree with you, cleaning the water will help the marine animals out a lot. Right now, there are hardly any animals living by the shore in New York which is very sad because there should be marine life everywhere there's water.

  • 1 - I think that the oysters will affect the climate issue in a very positive way. I didn't know that they are natural cleaners and even just that I think is amazing. I think that they could help reduce the amount of chemicals and run-off that is in the waters helping the fish life and quality.

    • It is amazing that the oysters are natural cleaners, the process of how they clean is a mystery to me, but I think it's super cool that an animal so small can do something so big for the world. I think that they will reduce the bad stuff in the water in a major way and the fish life will be restored.

  • If I got a job cleaning the New York shore, I would make sure that the oysters are safe, for one. If people are messing with them, they won't be able to do their job effectivly. Next, I would probably put up signs raising awarness of the oysters in the water, which is another way of protecting the oysters.

    • Making sure the oysters are safe is probably the most important, I would agree. I don't know if anyone would mess with them, but you never know what to predict in people. The awareness is a really good idea, getting money and things to fund the project is smart.

  • I think that because of the clean water the ecosystem will work better and then reverse the effects of climate change. I would try my best to do what I am told because I wouldn't really know what to do, but I would love to help out, even if it was just cleaning the shores.
