Shuyan Ye is an international student from China who is a freshman attending the University of New Mexico for a major in computer science and statistics. Shuyan Ye discovered his dorm room door covered in a plastic tarp with a sign that said “Caution, Keep out, Quarantine.” At first, he thought that this was real and not just a racist, unfunny prank that had been pulled on him. However, shortly after he realized that he hadn’t received an email from his managment and that it was in fact a prank. Shuyan Ye believes that one of his roommates did this. He stated that he felt terrified in the moment. He then reported the occurrence  to the school and the police as a hate incident and moved out. The university was not able to identify who did this, but they decided to provide education to the people residing in the dorm.

Why do you think this happened? Why do you think that someone would think that this is a funny thing to do?

I think that people just don’t understand or care about how hurtful their words can be. I believe that they also don't understand the extent of the consequences of their words. The person who did this probably thought that their prank was funny and edgy. I think that they knew what they were doing was wrong but they didn’t care.

Do you think that the way the university handled the situation was beneficial? What do you think the punishment should have been if they find who did this?

I think that educating the students was a very creative and helpful way of taking this opportunity to educate others. However, if they find who did this, I think that they should be suspended at the least for vandalizing his dorm room door.

  • Well done!

  • I think it was probably because most people dont see the virus as a serious thing so they thought it would be funny to scare someone into thinking their room had been infected or something along those lines. No I think they could have tried harder to find out who did it because things like racist jokes like that should not be tolerated in a place like that and have given some sort of punishment to the student who did the act

    • I also think that they took the virus with a grain of salt and that caused them to make this joke. I also think that the university should have pushed harder to find out who was at fault because it is a serious situation. I'm confused because I would've thought that they would have had cameras in the building, and if they don't well then maybe they should get some.

  • I think that some don’t care about how it can affect someone. They don’t care how it could hurt someone because they just think it’s funny. They think it’s fine because it’s “a joke” to them. Yes, the school educating the students about this could resolve issues in the future. I think they should be suspended for vandalism, and partially into bullying.

    • I agree that some people simply don't care how their actions affect others. I agree that they just find it funny instead of offensive. I agree that educating others could prevent them from making the same mistakes that others have in the past.

  • I think this happened because Shuyan Ye herritage is from China, and the Corona Virus as started in China and is rapidly spreading. I Think people would think this is a joke and not take it into thought that it could piossibly be hurtful towards Shayun Ye. I aslo think that the University could have handled this situation better than what they did.

    • I agree that Shuyan Ye's herritage was the reason for the prank. I agree that people wanted to pull a joke on him but I think that they had bad and hurtfull intentions. I think that since they did not find out who did this the university acted well.

  • This happened as a prank from a friend to friend, and they would've probably came out and said it was them if he didn't freak out just cause he's chinese. They shouldn't have been involved because you don't get the cops involved when a friend or someone else pranks you. There shouldn't be a punishment because it was harmless and was overreacted on.

    • There is no evidence that a friends did this to him. I agree that he probably shouldn't have gone as far as calling the police, but I think that getting the university involved was understandable because it happened there.

  • The university shouldn't of even gotten involved. It was a harmless prank and because he is Chinese he immediately screamed racist to try to get something out of it. This was blown out of proportion and shouldn't even been a story. Liberals are getting smarter by the day.
