Story: There was a t.8 magnitude earthquake that stuck Nepal in April 2015. It killed way over 8,000 people and turned a lot of the country into a disaster zone. About two weeks later there were recovery operations arriving, but then a 7.3 magnitude quake caused further destruction. The daughters of families are usually the ones that get abused and raped. The girls, especially those with disabilities or from ethnic minorities or certain castes, are the ones who are the most vulnerable to exploitation and abuse. The current estimates of trafficking are an annual total around 20,000.
Question:
1. Why do these disasters make children so vulnerable for trafficking?
2. What can be done about it?
Opinion:
1. I think because everything is chaotic in the country and no one is really paying attention to the kids as much. I think it is easier to snatch them and pick them up without the parents knowing.
2. I think watching your kids 24/7 and getting people over there to help with that problem. Hopefully when it gets better over there, human trafficking will go down.

Well done Megan!
I think the girls are vulnerable because they could have been separated from their families and a lot of people die and their bodies aren't discovered until years later so it could take awhile before someone figures out that they are missing. I don't think much can be done for it because at the times of these disasters there is more focus on saving the injured and rescuing those that are trapped that you don't really focus on anything else.
I think that the kids are vulnerable due to the chaos going on during the earthquakes, the chaos causing parents and everyone to panic and "abandon all hope". At this moment I don't really know what could be done about it. Its going to continue no matter what the government or UN do about it.
A disaster like this makes people vulnerable, and that is the perfect opportunity for bad people to do bad things. I don't know what can be done about this child trafficking, maybe have more police during times like this.
Because it easy to grab them. No one is paying as much attention and they probably would not expect something like that to occur. I think paying attention to kids more in public would help.
I think that disasters like these make children so vulnerable because everyone is focused on other things. People are all over the place, and unfortunately, many people are concerned with themselves before others. I think that keeping track of your family would definitely solve some problems. I also think trying to focus on others before yourself could help too.
I agree, peoples attention are on other things than their kids or people at this moment. This could very well be why the numbers are getting higher in that country.
I think that these during a disaster, people would just assume that they were dead instead of missing. I don't know what more they can do except trying to keep a better eye on the kids.
I didn't think about it that way! Yes it could very well be that people assumed they were dead and not missing!
I think that disasters like this make them more vulnerable because they feel as though they have nothing left to live for and their lives can never go back to normal so what is it going to hurt. I think that their parents, or friends, or people who care about them could really try to stop them. If the community helps and tries to stop it, maybe the numbers will go down.
