Chemical Attack in Syria: Who's Responsible?

Syria, which is divided in civil war between rebels and government, has seen its latest deadly attack. On Saturday, April 7, there was a chemical attack in the Syrian city of Douma. So far, 70 civilians have been reported to be dead, and another 500 are showing symptoms of sickness. Douma is one of the last rebel-controlled cities, so it's clear the Syrian government caused this attack. However, the government and it's ally, Russia, have denied responsibility for what's happened. They're accusing rebels of causing the attack to hamper the loyal army's advances and create international military involvement. The anti-government rebels claim that Syrian military helicopters dropped barrels of chemicals onto the town. The International Rescue Comittee says this attack "only serves to further demonstrate that the government of Syria will stop at nothing to win this war."

1. As an onlooker, how do you feel about this attack? If you were one of the people in Syria affected by the attacks how would you feel?

2. Who do you think is responsible for the attacks, and why?

I feel very upset by the news of the attack. Chemical warfare is scary, and also looked down upon, which is probably why nobody has taken credit for causing this chaos. If I was in Syria and this happened I would be scared of the war more than ever, and I would feel very sorrowful for the people who died and were hurt by the chemicals. I think that the government is responsible for the attack and are denying it because they'll have backup from their allies. I think that the people who were there would be telling the truth.

  • Good job Sam! Be sure to provide a hyoerlink to your story.

  • The news about the attack in Syria is upsetting. It shocks me that 70 people are dead and 500 are ill from the attack. I think that what the Syrian government and Russia have said about not being behind the attack is a lie. The leader is a dictator and probably does anything he wants to get what he wants. That's why I think he and Russia are behind this.

  • I mean if they did it to get the U.S. to help them, I could possibly understand. I still think that killing a lot of people isn't the way to go. If I was on of the people in Syria, I would want to get out of there as fast as I could.

  • I feel scared that this attack happened in Syria because they could keep on coming with the rate it's at now. I am pretty sure that the Syrian Government is the leader of these attacks because someone had even spotted a government helicopter dropping barrels of gas straight on helpless people.

  • I find this attack awful and very sad. It's sickening to see daily that people are dying for being innocent. I don't know who is in charge of these attacks probaly who ever doesn't like Syria or the Goverment.

  • I feel scared and not very happy about hearing this story. I would feel awful that so many people died and are injured. I think enemies and government are responsible for this attack. I would feel scared that this might happen in the US.

  • I think that assad is becoming out of had and we need to take action on all these crazy things hes doing. I think that we just need to send some troops so they realize we are not messing around. I think it was their government

  • 1-As on looker the fact that this even happened is upsetting and disturbing. If I was a person affected by this I would want answers and more than just a denial from both sides because clearly someone did it. And I wouldn't feel safe, I'd be worried that something like that could happen again soon. 2- I think that it was the government. Governments that are in the state the one in Syria are tended to take rash and unnecessary actions. There so concerned with winning this civil war and whipping out the rebels their not concerned with the civilians. And their denying it because of how people look at chemical warfare.

  • I think that it is very unfair for the people who were attacked. There are reports that the attack happened at night when the victims were likly sleeping. I feel like that it was unfair because it was their own governement attack them during the cover of night. I think that it is the government. I think its the governemnt because they are trying to fight the rebels off from taking over the governement.

    • The attack took place over a course of days, so the impact is even more devestating. I also feel the same way, and it's very unethical to do something like this. I agree that the government is responsible.
