Changing Lights to Improve Health

According to the news article attached below many large cities (such as Phoenix, Lake Worth Florida, and cities in Connecticut) are changing their powerful LED street lights to a lower color temperature with less blue emission. With the help of the American Medical Association these cities are making a big change with their street lights. Latest research has shown that LED lights that have a temperature higher than 3000 kelvin have a huge impact on our health. Health issues such as damaging our eyes and unhealthy sleep patterns. These large cities have been using LED lights that are up to  5000 k - 4000 k and have agreed to replace their street lamps with LED light with 3000 k and less blue emission. Overall Goal- getting 3000 k lights everywhere with less brightness, and blue and white emission.

Questions:

1. Do you think this solution will help improve eye sight and sleeping patterns? Why or why not?

2. Do you think more cities will get in involved in changing their street lamp lights? why or why not?

3. What are your thoughts on this and do you have any other ideas of how we could use this in other things?

1. I think this will definitely have a huge improvement on eye sight and sleeping pattern, because the lower temperature doesn't effect those problems as bad as higher ones do.

2.  Yes with improving the health of daily task I do see more cities getting involve. I strongly believe this is just one step to many improvements and many cities will want to be involved.

3.  I think this is incredible and not only does this interest me but it makes me wonder where else we could use this. We could bring this to lightning in all places like indoors or outdoor stadiums. the options are endless.

  • Great topic but be sure to reply to student comments a bit more regularly.

  • I feel it will help many people that have bad eyesight, or just need different things. If the lights show improvement to peoples help other towns and states wont want to refuse!

  • I think it will because just by looking at the picture you can tell that it is easier on your eyes. I think more cities will when they see the positive impact that it is having on other cities. I think this could be used in small towns, not just big cities.

  • I think the lights will help improve eye sight and will be better to see things on the road. I think more cities should get involved because the lights are much improved. I really like the improvements of the lights.

  • I think it will improve because the previous lights are harsh on the eyes and I can see this improving things a lot. I think they will because looking at the pictures above the second picture looks abetter, assuming that's the one with the new lights. I think it would be easier and safer to drive with lights like the second picture. I think this is a good idea and I hope it works and other cities adopt this so that the health of their citizens can improve.

  • Yes, I do because it will help our health as it says in the article. I think they will especially if it involves the safety of the population. I think it is a good idea and all cities should go to these lights.

  • I haven't really ever thought about this, but I do think that this solution could definitely help improve eyesight and sleeping patterns! I think that more cities will catch on once they see the success of the cities with new lights in place.  I think this is a great solution and ideas like it could be implemented everywhere!

  • I think it would be able to help improve eye sign and seeing patterns for some people not all because everyone eyes are different. It depends they might change them.

  • I believe that it will help eye sight because the LED lights right now can be really bright, and hurt you eyes. And for sleeping patters the Brightness of the LED lights are really sharp in color, and a more dull color would be nice.

I also believe that many cities will make this change, having a duller color will also save energy.

  • I believe it could help sleeping patterns but it all depends on how much time you spend around these lights. If your job requires you to drive all day then it could impact you a lot more than someone that's inside all day. I think to replace all the lights would be really expensive so they'll most likely be slow to do it.
