Caring Class Helps Make Teacher's Christmas Special

Nathan Neidigk is a math teacher in Albuquerque, New Mexico at Volcano Vista High School. This holiday season is going to be hard for Neidigk. His wife recently passed away, and his two-year-old son was recently diagnosed with leukemia. One day, Neidigk casually told his class that he may not be able to buy Christmas presents for his child because of the hospital bills. For one week, Neidigk was away from school with his son. During his absence, the class of seniors all gave $20 each and bought a Nintendo Switch gaming console, case, and two games for his son. When Neidigk returned the following week, the students surprised him with their gift. Neidigk's reaction was of pure shock and gratitude.

Questions:

1. How would you feel if you were in Neidigk's position?

2. Does this inspire you to help others this holiday season? What are some ways you could help others?

If I was in Neidigk's position, I would be very surprised to receive such an expensive gift from students in high school. I would, of course, be super thankful. This does inspire me to help others. A way I can help others during the holiday season is by adopting a family and purchasing Christmas gifts for them.

  • Well done Katelyn!

  • 1. I would feel pride towards my students, for the fact that they stepped up to help me would be more than any gift

    2. Sure it does. I would go out as often as I could to help with things like salvation army and related non-profits

  • I would be very surprised and happy that my class cared about me and wanted to get me a gift. I would say this does help inspire me to help others and that just getting them a gift could make there whole Christmas better. A way to help would definitely be adopting a family which I've done though 4-H.

  • I would be extremely happy because your job is to help and teach these kids, and when you are the one that needed help the kids helped you right back. It is very inspiring because there are lots of ways to help others like caroling or donating food.

  • I would be overjoyed that someone thinks of me in that way and cares about me enough to do this for me. I think that this is an incredible story that these kids would do that. This is a very inspiring story. We could help people out, or even just sending a card or saying hi.

  • 1. I would feel very grateful to my students, and their families, with the good people they are and I would try to spend a lot of time with my son.

    2. We can always donate money to organizations, for children, adults or the elderly, also for victims of fires or tornadoes, in general we can help in any way, even giving food or old toys.

  • I would be so grateful and happy to have such amazing student who are willingly able to come up with the idea to do this while I was away and pull it off. They gave a lot and this is soo amazing. A surprise for sure but a amazing one. We always have an adopt thing where we also give gifts to children of parents in financial struggle so I can relate as we do this, in a way, as well.

  • 1. If i was in Neidigk's position I would be grateful to have such great people in my life. It would also take a huge weight off of my shoulders for Christmas. 2. It does inspire me to give back this holiday. My church has gone to the Open Door Mission and sorted toys for parents that can't afford toys for their kids. There are so many opportunities to give back around this time of the year.

  • Very surprised and grateful with the class (and I would give extra points to the students...) just a joke, but yeah, it would be very nice to have that from the students, I would feel lucky to have students like them. I do not know if this inspired  me or no, but anyway I was going to give my family something special.

    • I would also be very surprised and grateful. It was very nice of them. It would be very nice to have such amazing students. He is very lucky. That's nice that you are going to give your family gifts.
