As we all know, the US capitol building was stormed this week on wednesday.Violent Trump supporting rioters broke into the capitol building in what I would call a failed coup Pipe bombs were found at both the DNC and RNC. You don’t leave explosives somewhere unless you are hoping to harm or kill people. This act of domestic terrorism claimed the lives of five people, but it could have been much worse. What these people did was disgusting and should be completely condemned. You can’t just storm a government building because your candidate didn’t win. You can’t spread false information about a stolen election when there is no widespread evidence. It goes against what America stands for in the first place. We are a democracy, and It is sad to see what our country has come to.
The last time the capital was stormed was during the war of 1812, over 200 years ago. The US declared war on the british in June of 1812. On August 24th of 1814, the british had just defeated the americans at the battle of bladensburg, which occurred about 6 miles from Washington DC. After their victory, they decided to march to DC. When they arrived, drummers were ordered to play a drumbeat that requested Americans to discuss surrendering or a truce, but there was no response. After, American snipers shot British officers, and they decided to burn government buildings, including the white house, which at the time was called the executive mansion, and the capitol building. When they got into the capitol, they poured gunpowder around the building. The 3,000 books in the library of congress was great fuel for the fire. The next day, it rained, and the fire was extinguished. Hundreds of thousands of dollars of damage was done to the building, but the building was made out of a lot of fireproof materials, so some of the building survived the fire. The small house rotunda survived the fire and is still one of the oldest rooms in the building.
What do you think about the recent events at the capitol?
What do you think these recent events say about or mean for our country?

Great topic choice and well done overall Theresa! Be sure to reply in three different days next time.
I believe that the people who stormed the capitol were overeacing. They think that the election was rigged, but there is very little evidence of that. America is a country of law and order. If people act like this and end up killing people and destroying buildings, then there will be chaos. There have been a lot of riots and protests recently, which means a lot of people are not happy with the way our country is. Things like this rarely end peacefully, so this could be a very bad sign for America's future.
As a conservative, I believe what these people did was utterly disgusting and they need to be punished for their actions. However, the BLM protests were much worse claiming the lives of 19 people and taking away small businesses by burning them down when those businesses were already struggling. You cannot sit here and tell me that the BLM protests were "better" because they were fighting against social injustices and police brutality. These people were just simply fighting for what they believed was right much like the BLM protesters. I think that these recent actions show that our country is weakening and we need to come togther again to form unity between each other. If we do not work together to make America well again, I am afraid of the consequences that we will have to endure.
I don't think anything that took place at the capitol was okay. I agree that it was completely disgusting and should never happen. However, similar rioting took place during the blm protests and riots. 19 people were killed in these riots and that is almost 4 times the amout that was killed a the capitol. both protests started peacfully and both ended inriots. I think there were both good and bad people on both sides. These people also believe that what they are doing is right. This doesnt justify their actions, but it does show that they care for our con=untry, just i the wrong way.
I agree with almost everything you said in this post, most of these people causing damage had or knew little little evidence that the election was rigged and storming the capitol was one of the most unintelligent things anyone could have done. I think this is way different from the one in 1814 because this is an attack on our own country and the other one was during a very serious war by the opposing country.
I completely agree with what you said about our country and this event. The storming of the capitol was an act of terrorism due to extreme nationalism. If those people were POC, they would've been treated very, very differently. BLM protestors were called thugs by Donald Trump, but he said he understood and loved the capitol raiders. Regardless of what candidate they were there rioting over, the president should not have let that happen as long as it did. It's embarrassing for everyone in this country, no matter their political stance.
I coluldn't agree more. I also didn't mention when Trump said that he loved these people, but that was really dissapointing too. It's dangerous when he tells all of these crazy white supremesists proudboy's ect. that he loves them and encourages them. I think that that is why we have seen so many people comfortable expressing their racist, ignorant views over these past four years. There shouldn't be a place for bigotry in this country.
I agree with what you said here. I agree that what happened at the capitol was horrible and it definitely was not patriotic. I think the constant battles between political parties this past year has been crazy. However, I think both parties need to come together in the middle. Both sides have rioted, destroyed property that wasn't there, and overall been very hypocritical. Like I said, what happened at the capitol was 100% wrong, but there are many moderate democrats and republicans with good morals who would never hope for that to happen. I'm hoping that this passes soon and we can get back to normal and continue to meet in the middle.
I agree. Both sides have rioted and I don't condone violence on either side. With that said, I think that it has brought up how the response to each parties violence is different. Like how for the BLM protest at the capitol there were 100's of national gaurd members on the stairs of the capitol, but these people were able to break into a government building mostly unscathed, and there were even videos showing law enforcement taking selfies with the rioters in the capitol (link- https://twitter.com/bubbaprog/status/1346920198461419520?s=20) and video of officers simply letting these people right on pass the barricades (link- https://twitter.com/Ary_Omega/status/1347279269630771202?s=20) . I think that brings up an important issue that shouldn't be ignored. And I'm not saying that all cops are corrupt (because that is not true), I'm saying that there are a good number that are and that is very dangerous and it shouldn't be allowed for a person like that to have a job like this because we can see how dangerous it can be.
I think that the recent events that happened at the capital are absolutely terrible and wrong. I think the recent events really just shows how divided we are as a country and to fix that, I believe that we will need to figure out our priorities ASAP, so we stop headed down this path as a divided nation.
