Calorie counts go on fast-food menus

Customers at fast-food chains in Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas ordered items containing fewer calories per transaction in the weeks preceding the displaying of the items health figures. It is interesting to observe how the calorie count on an item influences what consumers order. Some locations, including New York City and California, imposed rules years ago to combat obesity. The purpose is to give consumers more information to make better choices regarding their meals. Some have suggested that the calorie count stated leads to modest or no change. Studies suggest that this may be the case in the South, where obesity rates have a tendency to be higher. Still, many proclaim more research is needed to fully understand the effects of this practice, especially over long periods of time. Perhaps in other settings, like sit-down restaurants, the effects may differ. Some say it could be that people don't notice the numbers on crowded fast-food menus, nor do they know what they mean. Many people don’t know what is considered “a lot” of calories.(Q1:A) I have never noticed that you can see how many calories are in your food at a fast-food restaurant. Still, people deserve to know what it is they are putting in their bodies. (Q2:A) I don't think people make their choices because of how many calories there are in the food. I don't think people will order less. People will order what they want or what they feel they are hungry for. Read it here

Q1: Do you think that people should be able to see how many calories there are in the food and do you think people think about how many calories they are in the food then they are ordering food?

Q2: Do you think people order less because they can see how many calories there are in the food? What could be a better option or should the stats not be there at all?

  • Good topic choice and good summary Laura. Be sure to capitalize key words in your title and also be sure to comment to most students when you have two pages of comments. -5 late

  • I don't believe that it is that big of deal. The reason I say this is because the people that would care about the calories would not be going to the fast food places in the first place. This goes the same for the second question. Although a lot of people do watch their weight, those who want to would have a better time just not going to fast food places.

  • I think that everybody needs to be more aware of what they are eating and what the consequences can be of eating certain foods. Many people today tend to eat for the enjoyment of it rather than the nutrition. I think calorie counts are a great way to force people to be more aware of this, especially in notoriously unhealthy businesses. I think the calorie counts have the potential to sway people to go for 'healthier' options because it can guilt them with the high numbers.

  • I think being able to see the calorie count in my foods would be helpful and nice to know especially if someone was trying to lose weight. It will help people be aware what they are putting into their bodies. Yes, I think once people see the amounts of calories in the food they might not order so much.

  • I think that people should be able to see how many calories are in their food mainly because if they are on a diet and having a cheat day but still want to watch their calories they don't have to ask. Just because they see the calorie count doesn't mean they will change their order mainly becasue some people don;t care what they eat.

  • I believe that people that should be able to see how many calories there are in food, because if your on a diet it can be beneficial, and some people will just want to know. I don't really look at the calories, but, like I said before, if your trying to lose weight or can only have a certain amout of calories. That's really the only way that you can know.

  • I think that we should be able to see how many calories are in our food because it might be important to some people about how many calories they take in. I don't think people think about how many calories are in the food they order.  I think that low-calorie foods are a better option in the long run.

  • I think that people should be able to see how many calories there are in food. If calorie lables are required on packaged food, it should be required on served food. I think that people probably do order a little less if they are concerned about calories. I think that maybe a low calorie or smaller version of foods would be the best option.

  • Yes, I think people shpould be able to see the calories and most places do that now a days. I don't think many people think about the calories, for example when I go to a place I don't look at the calories I'll order it if it sounds good or tastes good. I think it is beneficial for people who are trying to watch their calories and it doesn't hurt anyone or anything with the calories being labeled on menus.

    • I think you're right. It does not hurt anyone that the calories are being labeled on menus and most people do not pay attention to it but do u think they should label more? like how many calories you are supposed to eat in a day or is that too much information?
