The state of California will ban public schools from being named "Redskins". It will not stop from naming parks and buildings from being named that. Atavists from Change The Mascot are for this cause. California is the first state to ban this slur. Some individual school districts in different states have banned this term as well. Controversy over the N.F.L.'s Washington Redskins name has spilled over into the presidential race.
In my opinion I think it's good that they are banning this term/slur but I am not for Washington Redskins changing their name to something different.

Questions:
1. Do you agree with California's ban on this slur?
2. Do You think the Washington Redskins should change their team name?

Good job with your summary but you didn't reply to any student comments.
I think that is a good idea and a bad idea only because they are changing it from a derogatory term to something much better I'm sure, but I also feel like whoever wants it changed just wants the money out of it. I don't think they should have to because it has been around for so long and people get offended by everything, but we shouldn't have to change every term out there otherwise no one would be satisfied.
i agree with banning the name redskins, I dont have enough information about it but coming from what you said about it, i think the Washington redskins shouldn't change their name .
No, because I'm sure the person who is actually starting this whole thing. Just wants money out of the deal. I don't think they should have to because I'm sure it's not supposed to be taken racially.
I can see it both ways really, for I understand that 'Redskins' is considered very offensive to many Native American tribes and if that's the case then maybe there should be some consideration of banning it. I also think, though, that the tern 'Redskins' represents a part of history more than it does racial slurs here in America. I'm not sure exactly how I'd vote on it, but regardless if it's offensive or not I doubt that was ever the intention of the schools, football teams, and buildings named after the 'Redskins'.
I'm not quite sure if I agree with this or not. I guess some people could take offense for schools naming stuff with the term, but to me, I kind of think that it is just a way to recognize their importance in history and today. I think that this is what most people thought, as well, when they named stuff The Redskins. Therefore, I don't really think it's fair that the Washington Redskins might have to change their name. I'm pretty sure they never intended the name to be offensive to anyone in any way at all.
I don't think it really matters.. I mean it's a part of their history you just can't forget about it. I don't think they should have to change their names.. It's not going to do anything but tick some people off.
I understand when people feel racist about it but I don't really see a big deal in changing it. I don't think that they shouldn't change their name.
I understand why people would be offended by this term, but I would almost be honored if my race was chosen to be a mascot of a school. Obviously schools want to have a name that's intimidating and something that symbolizes strength, so wouldn't they be a little 'proud' to be a mascot. I've never been in this kind of a situation, but maybe if I was, I would have a different feeling or opinion about it.
I agree with the changing of the name, but it will be hard for people to call it the new/different name, if banned. It will be a new name, but they will be remembered as 'Redskins'.
