A teacher and student at a southeast Los Angeles, California, high school came in conflict Friday afternoon. There is footage of the Maywood Academy High School music teacher, Marston Riley, standing face-to-face with the student when out of nowhere, Riley thows a punch. The boy ends up on the ground and Riley repeatedly punching the 14 year old. Students and officers eventually are seen trying to break the student from Riley's grip. Unfortunatley, Riley still tries to pursue him. The fight was said to be started because of the student wouldn't leave the classroom under Riley's orders due to improper school uniform. The boy is shown in the video to be using profanity and racial slurs because the teacher was African American. The boy was taken to the hospital and treated for moderate injuries and released later that night. Riley was aressted with charges of child abuse. He posted bond and was released Saturday. Now, Riley has an arraignment scheduled for November 30th.
What cautionary acts should the school take after the incident?
I think that they should be very cautious when they hire a new teacher and do a clear background check. Also have some police patrol to make sure no other violent outbreak occurs.
Do you think the student deserves any real punishment?
For the most part, no. I think he should have clearly listened to the teacher about his outfit and that would have been it. I do think the teacher shouldn't have used physical threats to the student. I find that very unproffesional which cost him his job, and integrity.

Well done Emily!
They should fire the teacher for what she did and than suspend the student for the slus he mad and the lanage he used. Yes some people might think the student is the inaccent one here but he aslo was saying things he shouldnt have and makeing the teacher mad so it is kinda his fault why she punched him.
In my opinion they should fire the teacher and don't let him teach at other schools again because if a person is beating up a child on purpose and doesn't stop even when others step in they shouldn't be allowed to work with children again to make sure something like that won't happen again.
Maybe he should get dresscoded or get detention so he knows that racism is not okay but I think most teenager would act that way just because they want to make a joke or provocate a bit and don't understand how serious that is.
I think that they should train the teachers how to deal with this. I aslo think that the school should ask the teachers what they would do if they were put in this situation. Yes, he verbally assulted the teacher.
I think that maybe when they hire teacher is to carefully look at their background incase they did or have somtime that was in their past. But in my time living LA California no teacher would every lose their cool most teachers in California can handle it better.
i don't think the student should get into trouble. what he did wasn't right but he was just speaking his mind. the teacher was no way in the right she could have handled the situation alot better but she took the bad way instead.
I agree with you. There's a god given right we all have and it's freedom of speech. Although, I don't think he should have used it against an adult over a simple situation like that. The teacher also shouldn't have taken things that far.
I think that no matter if the boy was using retial slurs he shouldn't ever lose his cool like that. If it was a college proffessor then it would be a different story. I think that the student should face expulsion also.
I think that they should evaluate the next teacher they hire and maybe reevaulate the other teachers they already have. This could be true with a bunch of schools. He could have obeyed, but I don't know really what should happen.
I agree. With the new teacher they hire, they've got to be extra "investigative" to see if a teacher is the right fit for their classroom, and to the kids. The boy should have listened and just let it go, but I don't really know either for a punishment.
