Buying Local vs. Big Corporations

Where do you find yourself and others buying gifts at Christmas time? Do your parents order from Amazon or go shopping for everyday items? As big companies like Amazon grow larger and gain popularity, more people go online to Amazon to shop for everyday items. It’s convenient, but is it worth it?

Communities thrive when they have well-run and thriving local stores and businesses. It’s important for towns and cities to have a growing local economy. Yelp says that as of last August, over 160,000 US businesses have had to close. Some people estimate that 60% will not be able to reopen. During Covid, as people shopped way more online, we see how that impacts smaller businesses. Some people have continued to stay in the habit of not going out to stores. This shows how as people shop more and more at big corporations, the smaller businesses struggle to stay open. It also shows how communities rely on these local stores.

I think that shopping locally is very important. It supports businesses and it supports your community. I also think that buying things from amazon isn’t that bad. It’s convenient, easy, they deliver right to you without you having to go anywhere, and has a wide selection of things right at your fingertips. I think that in times where you need to use amazon it’s very helpful but I think it’s more important that people make sure they are not only giving amazon their business. There can be a good balance of both but the impact from buying locally has a much greater impact.

How do you think we can find a balance between buying locally vs. big online businesses? Should we buy from them at all?

Which do you think is most important and most beneficial in our world today?

  • Great topic choice and well done Mabel! I do think your summary could have been a bit longer but it was well written.

  • I think locally business and online business will never be balanced because local ones are overlooked. I feel like when you need something in a hurry local is the way to go ,but if you need something that isn't in the Harlan area online is the way to go.

  • I think that if it's something that you needed the day of or fairly soon then shopping locally is typically the most common option, like grocery shopping nearly everybody in the harlan area goes to a grocery store unless they are delivered from another food service. But if it's a part for a vehicle or something that isn't as important then online shopping is easier because you could price shop.

  • there will never be a balance because the small people are overshadowed by the big people because the big people ave money and the small people are the most importaint because without them the big people could price whatever they want as high as they want and that is no good

  • In my opinion lot of people encourage and talk about how buying from smaller companies and bussinesses are better for them but we always end up buying from big world-wide companies because they sell it a lot cheaper since they can stock bulk them.

  • I think shopping locally is a great thing for the community I also think it is a very good thing for people to do and it should be done more often but sometimes local businesses sell everything you need sometimes you have to go somewhere bigger for what you need.

    • i agree that even when you buy locally, they don't always have what you need and you have to go to a bigger place like amazon anyways.

  • I think buying local is important in small towns like harlan where we have stores other places don't. For example, Borderfare, no other towns have this restaurant, and buying from them helps keep their business afloat. Buying from big corporations is okay and sometimes needed but buying locally is important to help support small business in small towns.

  • I think that we should shop local if we can because we support of community and provide for the families of the businesses. However, shopping online can be nice because you can find almost everything. I think that shopping locally is most important today, but buying online is most benefical.

    • I think that the wide variety of products online is the best thing about buying online because I fouy can't find something near you, you can almost always find it online.
