Bride Kidnapping in Kyrgyzstan

Grab and run! Bride kidnapping in Kyrgyzstan is a tradition called ala kachuu. It is now illegal but many still follow the tradition.

Typically, a man who wants to marry, gathers a group of men to drive around looking for a women to marry. The family of the man that is going to be married are at home preparing for the wedding. When the man finds a perfect bride, they drag her into the car and drive away. The bride is terrified and she tries to escape because when you get kidnapped, you are going to be forced to marry a stranger you don't know. Then they take the bride to the wedding and the family members have to convince her to marry the groom. It usually takes hours or maybe even days to convince her. The family members of the groom convince her that the stranger she is going to marry is a good man. When the bride says no at first, that means that she is pure. Finally, when the bride says yes, she is then married with the stranger who kidnapped her. The parents of the girl that got kidnapped will not allow her to return home because she is no longer pure, but some parents do allow her to visit.

Questions:

1. What would you do and how would you feel if you were getting kidnapped?
2. If you were a parent, and your daughter got kidnapped, what would you do, or how would you feel? Why?
3.If your parents forced you to kidnap a woman, would you do it? Why or why not?

My Opinion:

I think this is very terrible to happen. If I was getting kidnapped I would feel terrified because this means that I would have to get married to a stranger! I would do anything I can to escape and cry for help. If I was a parent and my daughter got kidnapped for marriage, I would feel angry at the man who did this. I would try to find her and take her away from the man who she is forced to be married with. The reason is because my daughter is my own flesh and blood and I don't want anything bad to happen to her. If I had to kidnap a woman, I would not do it because I don't want to get someone I don't love or I have not met yet.

  • Interesting story and very well done!

  • I'd be absolutely terrified. I would definitely try to escape the vehicle somehow. If I was the parent of someone who got kidnapped, I would sure try to get some revenge on them by giving them a good piece of my mind. I wouldn't do what my parents told me to do because I'm my own person and nobody, even my parents can make me do such a horrible thing.

    • Right! You are your own person and only you can decide your decisions. Great thinking that you will not kidnap anyone because this a terrible thing, and this tradition really needs to stop.

  • I would be terrified. If someone took me and I didn't know what they were going to do with me I would freak out. I would try to escape and overpower my kidnappers until l escaped. If my daughter got kidnapped I would do anything to find her and stop her from marrying a total stranger. I wouldn't kidnap someone even if it was some tradition because it is wrong and illegal.

    • Yes! I would do anything I can to fight! Its great that you would try to get your daughter from being forced into a marriage. Also good thinking that you would not kidnap anyone because its illegal and its wrong.

  • I would be scared. This is serious and sickening. I would not give in to marrying a stranger. Sure, they say he is a good man, but they are his family. They are going to say that. I would do anything to find my daughter. I would not kidnap someone even if my family wanted to because I wouldn't have a clue who the person is.

    • Right! I heard a story that a girl has gotten kidnapped and they convinced her that her husband was a good man but he ended up abusing her until she died. I am glad to hear that you would do anything to find you daughter because that is what I would do.

  • I would squirm and scream and kick and punch and flail until I didn't have any energy left. Call the authorities and find her ASAP while crying in my bed every night until I found her or knew she was safe. No. I'm not Imbecilic.

    • I agree! I would do anything I possibly can to escape. I would also do anything I can to find my daughter. I am glad that you would be very worried for your daughter, I would be the same.

  • I would feel scared but I would also probably fight back. Go down fighting is what they usually say right? If I were a parent and my daughter was kidnapped, I would be set on a personal mission to fight the kidnappers.
