Boy Scouts Will Allow Girls To Join?

The Boy Scouts of America voted to allow girls to join Cub Scouts, with the chance to earn badges and achieve the Eagle Scout ranking. Meanwhile Girl Scouts, are not allowing boys to join due to their goal of reaching empowerment for females. Some might say the cub scouts are trying to be inclusive while girl scouts are being exclusive. Starting next year, the Boy Scouts of America will include girls. The decision comes after years of lobbying from families and direct pleas from girls themselves. WNYC's Yasmeen Khan spoke with some of them. People are starting to catch on to the fact that girl scout's activities differ from cub scouts. Some are offended by the fact that they are placing an activity to a specific gender. I agree this is somewhat unsettling however I am not enraged. I feel it would be best for both groups to include each other in trips and help each other earn certain badges by working together.

1. Do you think the boy scouts may have crossed a line when letting females join? If yes explain your answer. Why? I think this is a great Idea for girls who aren't comfortable around other young girls their age, however I do think it could cross the line depending on how many girls join. The number of girls shouldn't out rule the boys.

2. Do you think this could be beneficial or harmful? Why? It has the potential to go both ways but I feel it could be more beneficial than it would be harmful. My reasoning comes from my experience being a girl. Personally I am not comfortable around males or females but I manage. I know it can be hard for some young girls to make friends with other girls their age. Boy scouts could be an opening for them to finally gain good friendships.

  • I think allowing girls to join Cub Scouts will do more harm than good. People are claiming that there's a double standard here and there is, but it isn't a double standard worth fighting. How many boys do you actually think have asked to join Girl Scouts? Think about it.

  • Allowing girls to join Cub Scouts wouldn't be crossing the line because if a girl wants to join, it's probably because she isn't a fan of all the "girly" (version of) activities that Girl Scouts is bound to implement.

  • I think it is a good idea to push equality in different areas. I think this is a great opportunity for girls who work better with males or can relate with them more. I think its beneficial and harmful. Beneficial for those who are receiving money for all the added scouts and then harmful for possible conflicts in the future.

  • I think it would be a good idea because Theres a think called woman rights and women are supposed to be equal to men but there not and this is a good way of showing that the world is changing and women are becoming more equal to men.

  • I love this idea y'know it just goes to show that females are starting to be recognized as equals to men. Y'know im not gonna lie i think that its gonna be harmful because its the boy scouts the word is in the name BOY scouts they have a GIRLS scouts go join them if you want to but not the boy scouts.

  • 1. I think everyone deserves to be able not depending on their gender so i think it is a great idea.

2.I think this is only beneficial because of money growth and allowing girls to receive this experience.

  • I feel that they crossed the line because boy scouts are meant for boys(hints the name). If the girl would like to do the things that boys do they should talk to the girl scouts and see if they would be able to do it there way. I think that it would be harmful because if you put a girl in with a bunch of boys the boys will act very different then if it was just boys.

  • I think that they should not let females join for a couple reasons, being; I think that girls have girl scouts of their own, there's no need for a girl to be in boy scouts. They need to stop being problematic and just go to girl scouts, like every other girl who wants to do scouts.

    • I can see your point of view as I'm sure others share the same opinion. However, the scouts do significantly different things in their club. And I think it could open up many different opportunities but also cause some issues.

  • I think it's a good idea because they do different things, so by letting them join girls could do things that actually interest them because they don't do the same stuff. I could see it as both ways because you could let girls do stuff they want but I feel by having them both together could cause some difficulties.
