Bohemian Rhapsody Tops Box Office Over the Weekend

A movie about the lead singer of the famous band, Queen, opened this weekend raising $50 million in ticket sales. The film cost around $52 million to make, but has also brought in about $72.5 million internationally. This then made a global total of about $122.5 million. The movie was receiving some okay ratings. It got a 60% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and the New York Times said it is a, "plodding, literal-minded, conventional affair." The movie was having some cast issues. Sacha Baron Cohen, was suppose to be playing Freddie Mercury before he dropped out in 2013. Then the film's credited director, Bryan Singer, was then replaced by Dexter Fletcher. Even though the movie had some okay ratings, it did not stop the fans of Queen from entering the production. Bohemian Rhapsody had no problem topping the charts. It beat out number 2 finisher The Nutcracker and the Four Realms. The Nutcracker only made $20 million over the weekend.

When you go to the movies, do you usually depend on the reviews on if you should see it?

I usually do not depend on the reviews when I go to the movies. If I watch the trailer for the film and it's good, I will decide to attend the movie theater. I usually only depend on the trailer. If the trailer for the movie looks bad, I will not attempt spending money on the movie.

How do you feel about a movie coming out telling the story of Queen?

I love the idea. Queen was an amazing band in the 70's, and they created amazing music that is still popular today. I like that they decided to tell the inside story of Freddie Mercury because he was so different for his time. Queen was a band who liked to consider themselves a family, and I think that is a good message for all viewers.

  • Great job Maddie!

  • I do not depend on the reviews to choose whether or not I should see a movie, I never look at the reviews to movies. I usually see a trailer for it and if it looks good then I see it. I had never even heard about this band, i'm sure it would be very interesting to the fans, but I probably wouldn't watch it.

  • I usually go by reviews before deciding if I want to watch the movie. Most of the time, I do watch the trailers but if the reviews aren't very good and the trailer looks boring, I won't go see the movie and I'll instead maybe watch it at home when it comes out on paperview. I think that the idea of making a movie about Queen was a good idea because many people still love their music today and now they can learn some of the backstory on the lead singer.

    • I agree, if the trailer is boring, I will likely wait for the movie to come out on paperview. This way, I save my time and money for a movie that I may not like. Many people do still like Queen's music, so the idea to make a movie is amazing.

  • I dont look at the reviews i usually just watch the trailer if it looks good to me i will probably go see it. I love this idea i like the band and i cant wait to see what it entails because freddy was a different man in a different time.

  • Honestly I never look at reviews for movies, I always just watch a trailer and if I like that I'm going to the movies to watch it and if not then I just look for other movies because everyone thinks different about movies.

I think it is a nice idea for a movie because Queen is very famous and I guess the most people don't know more about for example single band members. Also it is something different than all the other movies.

    • I also just watch a trailer for a movie and that determines my decision. The movie is different compared to recent ones that having been coming out. It really hits a subject that isn't revealed in other films.

  • Usually I don't care about the reviews; I see the trailer and if I like it then I watch it. But I also depend on friend's opinions, so if they say the movie is not good then I don't watch it. I really like it, because Queen has really good songs that are still famous today, and the story about Freddie Mercury's life is really impressive.

  • I dont think listen or reading review for a movie because then it ruins the fun in watching a movie its better to watch a movie without listen to reviews and just watch it in the moment. Plus it pretty cool about a movie showing cool bands. Other movie is is similar is Straight Outta Compton just showing you about the rap group.

    • I agree, reading the review can ruin the fun and enjoyment of the movie. It's more fun to avoid reading reviews and watch the movie for yourself. I do think it is cool that they are making movies about all these bands. One of my favorites is Rock of Ages.
