Black box not working in NJ train crash

In the crash with 1 dead and more than 100 injured investigators  have discovered that the data recorder in the train was broken so they could not discover the cause of crash yet. The black box was built in 1995 and they should or need to be replaced. The New Jersey transit was fined in June for having safety violations. The conductor said he was going into the train station at 10 mph but people on board train said they felt like they were going faster than that. The train usually has five carts but this time it only had four because the other carts needed to be worked on so the trained was overloaded with passengers.

Do you think that the conductor was distracted by to many people being on board? Why/Why not

Do you think that the black boxed should be a federal law to be updated in train cars ever five years. Why/Why not

  • In your summary, be sure to explain what's going on in regards to the crash. You also didn't include your opinions, hyperlink back to the story and you only replied on one day instead of three.

  • He could have possibly been distracted, but I doubt he was because if he does that everyday he should be used to those situations. I think it would be a great idea to update them every five years simply for safety precautions.

  • I don't think the conductor was distracted but he might being lying about something else. I think that the black box should be changed if it's that old so it works properly so things like this don't happen.

  • I don't think the driver was distracted but he could be lying about something such as how fast he was going. I feel like the black boxed cars should be checked regularly and if need updated then update them.

  • I don't think that the conductor was distracted because from what I understand, they have their own cart. I think that the black box probably should have been updated because it is quite old. I'm not quite sure about the law. I think that they should be checked regularly to ensure the safety of their passengers.

  • I don't think that he was distracted, but I feel like he probably wasn't telling the truth about how fast he was going.

I feel like someone who knows more about black boxes than I do should test them to see how long they can go while still being effective.

    • I agree that they need to be like have a expired time on them and they buy them for all their trains at the same time and then people inspect them every couple years.

  • I don't think that he was distracted by by the passengers, he shouldn't be near the passengers more like in another cart. I think that it should be a federal law to be updated so that we can see what happens if this were to happen again.

    • I think so to because I think that it could keep people safe by having them because we can learn to make trains safer from the data recorder.

  • He should not have been distracted by the passengers because they would have been in a different car. They should update the train cars because if this much damage was caused than even more could happen over time if it is not fixed.
