Barbie's History

Barbie's official birthday is March 9, 1959. The day she was induced to the world. The first Barbie doll was the glamour of 1950s star, along with Elizabeth Taylor and Marliyn Monroe. In the first year, 300,000 Barbies were sold. The first Barbie doll sold for $3.00, but a mint condition #1 doll can be more than $25,000 today.

Over the years of her existence, Barbie had over 200 jobs. Barbie broke the plastic ceiling when she went to the moon in 1965. Four years before Neil Armstrong. Since then she has been about everything. Such as a doctor, rock star to a computer engineer.

Barbies on and off lifetime boyfriend, Ken Carson, was introduced two years after Barbie in 1961. Then in 1963 Barbie's best friend Midge Hadley was introduced. A year later, Barbie's first little sister was announced, Skipper Roberts.

There had been other African American dolls in the Barbie collection before, including Christie, Barbie's friend. They first introduced her in 1968, but African American dolls officially weren't created until 1980 along with the first Latin doll. In that same year, there were more that 40 different international Barbies released to date.

  • Good topic choice Reagan. Be sure to inlcude more of your voice within your summary.

  • I don't have any barbie dolls and I never did, however my sisters did. I never really found the eager to play with them. I didn't even know that it had gotten all this fame. I did not know that there were movies and films based of barbie and other dolls.

  • I used to have a Barbie doll, but not Ken, when I was younger. I was obsessed with watching all the Barbie movies and reading the books also. Looking back I don't really see what joy I found in playing with a doll but I loved always changing her clothes and doing her hair.

  • I do not have a Barbie doll because Barbie dolls are boring and there is no point to them. I do not have a favorite Barbie doll because I do not have a Barbie doll. The history of Barbie dolls is interesting though and it is crazy that an old one cost $25,000.

  • I grew up with two sisters, so we had a lot of dolls when I was younger. We had a lot of barbies and bratz dolls along with a barbie playhouse. We also played with polly pockets a lot. Although, I had a lot of barbie dolls I mainly played with American girl dolls. My favorite American girl was Julie.

  • I never really was a fan of Barbie Dolls when I was younger, I'm pretty sure I like baby dolls and polly pockets better. When I did have a little phase of liking Barbie Dolls, I LOVED putting different clothes and accesories on them. I loved playing "family" with Barbie, Ken, and the pets.

  • I used to have a ton of Barbie dolls and I had a couple of Ken dolls too. I loved dressing Barbie and Ken up with outfits that match eachother. I also had a big house for all of the dolls to "live" in. I don't remember which was my favorite, I liked them all.

  • I used to have a lot of Barbie dolls and played with them a lot. I had multiple accessories I would change out regularly. Before Barbie's, I liked Polly Pockets, and after Barbie's I liked American Girl Dolls. I had one Ken doll for a little while. I liked all the dolls the same and would give  them their own unique "personalities".

  • Yes indead I did have both the Barbie and Ken doll. I loved the doctor babrie more than any other one's because ive always wanted to be a doctor and now that im older im working my way there.

  • Barbies were one of my favorite toys as a child. My sister and I had tons of them and we'd make elaborate houses and shops for them, although we were more interested in Monster High Dolls, Ever After High Dolls, and Disney Dolls. That was almost all I did as a child. I loved that they could be in any setting; real life, fairy tales, etc. It's also super cool how inclusive the brand has become.
