A barbershop in Michigan is offering kids a two dollar discount on haircuts if they read out loud. Ryan Griffin, the barber, says he was inspired to do this while reading an article about a barbershop that is using the same idea. Griffin and the other barbers help the kids read and quiz them on the material. Griffin says that many kids have shown a lot of improvement in their reading and comprehension skills.
1. Do you think this is an effective way to help kids learn how to read? Why?
2. Should other barber shops offer this concept? Why?
3. Do you think that the discount will encourage more kids to read? Why?
My Opinion:
1. I think that this would be an effective way for kids to learn how to read, because some might not have the opportunity to have help with reading otherwise. Also it makes use of time that would be wasted.
2. Other barber shops should offer this concept, because it could help many more children learn how to read and comprehend the material. Also the discount will help parents with the cost.
3. I think that the discount will encourage more kids to read, because their parents will want them to get the discount. Also I think the kids will eventually start to enjoy reading and then read more on their own.

Well done!
Yes because they might not get the time to read. I think so because it keeps then entertained while they are getting a haircut. Yes it will encourage the parents to teach them how to read.
Yes because people always need hair cuts and almost forcing them to read to get one is a good way.
No because I think it may turn into a competition that would end up hurting the idea.
Yes because if you read to save more money who wouldnt do it.
Yes becasue it gets them out of thinking about the hair cut. Yes so that the youth can be more educated. not really but the parents might want them to try it
I really like this concept especially for some students that may not have parents home all the time to test them. It also is a fun way to make students enjoy learning which is something special in itself.
It probably will and help the kids read. But you can't always trust the barber to help the kids the right way. They could start to enjoy reading as long as they teach them the right way.
No. They should not. It's not up to the barbers to teach kids. It is the best idea to not teach kids because they might tell them wrong things. Then you have to teach all of the things they might of been taught wrong and correct it.
No. They should leave the teaching to the schools and the parents. If we have barbers and other people all around telling kids what to do. But this isn't right. We should have the teacher taught by trained professionals.
Yes it is they get more practice reading so they get better. Others should so that more kids get practice. Yes because it gives them a reason to read.
I think this is a great idea, because it's another way to try and get young kids reading. It may also help the barber shops because some kids are afraid of haircuts and this may excite them about haircuts or make them feel more comfortable.
