The definition of a failed state is a country or territory that can't provide basic public services for it's citizens.

This means that the country is probably in utter chaos because the majority of people are probably poor and many people will do many bad things to survive.

The Failing Nations article talks about how a nation gets to be on the "failing list".

It can happen by a civil war, many resouces will cause many leaders to try and take over the country, or it could just slowly deteriorate over time.

These are just some of the reasons. It is really kind of hard to decide if a country is failing or not.

The second article talks about the living comditions in Somalia.

Of course they are really bad, but this article goes in depth.

The article follows the life of a young man name Muhammad, 18.

He fishes for a living to feed him, his parents, and two younger siblings will have to share his earnings since a mortar blast nearly killed his father four years ago.

He usually brings a wheelbarrow full of fish to the market a day, which will give his family two to three dollars.

They get to eat today. He doesn't have enough money to pay the ten dollar school fee.

Even though there is no reason with all of his schoolmates gone, having joined an Islamic extremist group.

The entire country is under ruble and and ongoing war for power.
