Armed Teachers

First off let me start out by saying since the year 2000, there has been over 38 school shootings. I believe that if teachers were allowed a gun that number would decrease, but I’m also kind of iffy of this as well. Sometimes teachers can and probably will get mad at their students and knowing they have a gun will more than likely give the students a lot of fear. But a teacher shooting their students is also very unlikely. There has also been 49 school intruders since the year 2000 as well. I believe that if people knew that the school’s teachers had guns the intruder number would decrease as well. I wouldn’t care so much if I knew that the gun was owned and used by a teacher who hunts or knows what they’re doing. Also, the gun being protected.

Accidents could also happen, not knowing the gun is loaded and for some reason it going off could lead to something bad. Once again if the gun was in a secure area and wasn’t loaded until it needed to be, I would have no issue with teachers having guns. Teachers could also get mad or upset with their class and use that as a threat. Or do something with knowing that they have a gun and ammo in their classroom. Teachers have already kept kids’ hostage before so with them having a gun would make it worse. If teachers are never allowed guns, I feel likes schools should have more police officers enter and patrol the building.

I wouldn’t feel any different with my school’s teachers having guns, but some schools might be different. According to heinonline.org a student and a friend brought a gun to a school on March 24th, 1998 and had a mass shooting. With 37 injured and 12 dead I believe that if a teacher had a gun on them and the two students knew that I think that wouldn’t have happened or if it did, the numbers would be much smaller because the teachers probably would of shot the student. So, should teachers have guns? I think yes.

Would you feel comfortable with knowing your teacher had a gun? Yes or no, and why.

Do you think school shootings/break-ins would decrease if teachers had guns? Yes, or not, why or why not.

Do you think teachers will ever be allowed guns in all states? Why or why not.

  • Great topic choice and good summary Brayton! You didn't comment to any students which is worth 30 points. It is also three days late which is also -30.

  • I personally wouldn't feel comfortable with teachers being allowed to have a gun because I believe it could be dangerous to have guns on school property. I also don't think that the number of school shootings /break-ins would considerably decrease and that's because when you decide to do something as extreme as a school shooting you're not thinking straight and I'm not sure that you would think or care too much about your own safety.

  • To me it depends on the teacher, but for the most part I'd feel more protected. Not every teacher needs a gun though. Maybe around ten teachers in every school building. Generally, teachers become teachers because they enjoy or can easily handle adolesents and their emotions, so I feel like it'd be safer. Although, it comes down to whether or not a teacher would be able to shoot an armed student when faced with it. They get to know them in a school and so would it even be useful, or would it just lead to more gun accidents that could endanger students? Over all, I don't think it'd the brightest idea, but better security and police who are closer or even patrol the school would be beneficial. I feel like drug use in schools would also go way down. As far as teachers go though, gun licenses would need to be harder to get, just to be sure that accidents would be minimal and severe background and drug tests.

  • I would feel comfortable and more safe if our teachers carried guns and knew how to use them. I think that our protection woud increase with something like that, because in the event of a school intruder scenario we wouldn't have to wait for our local police to get to the school. I also think that school shootings would decrease, because it would be a well known fact in the community that our school has better means of protection. However, I do not think that it will be allowed in all states to let teachers carry guns. Things now are getting more cotroversial in our political landscape and something like this would be tough to get through and allow to happen.

  • I would feel comfortable if teachers had guns in their classroom, but in order for teachers to have them, I feel like they should have to go through special training so they know how to use them. If they would have a gun in the classroom it should also be locked up and no kids should know where it's at.

  • I wouldnt feel comfortable because guns dont belong in school period no matter who used them a better alternative would be to have something like a gaurd dog in each class room that at the sight of a gun goes crazy and attacks the wepon holder and defends the kids and teacher. This would work better with an intruder rather than a crazy student althought dogs have been taught to attack at the sight of a gun before.

  • I think I would feel pretty comfortable with teachers having guns in this school or other schools. But you would have to look at the positives and negatives of this. Yes, the numbers of school shootings could go down. Us students would feel safer knowing that if an intruder came in our teacher has a gun. On the downside if students were to act up and the teacher gets upset they could possibly threaten them. With that said I believe that teachers being armed would not be allowed in schools.

  • No, I would only feel comfortable if they have license for the firearm and had training, I feel like if a teacher had rights to have a gun they would miss use them in a way to protect themselves and not student. If they did have gun less people might try to break in.

  • Personally I am a little bit iffy on this subject as well. Most teachers I would feel comfortable with them having a gun, but you know There would be some crazy teachers around the country that would abuse the gun and threaten kids with them. So in the end, the concept of it is good, but I think the teachers should go through tests to prove they are worthy of carrying a weapon.

  • I think I would feel more protected if my teachers had a gun. I also think that maybe not every teacher needs one and they should all have background checks and drug test with many other things before they are allowed to carry. I think that the school shooting and stuff might decrease but even if it doesn't I think that the injuries and fatalities would decrease. I don't know about in all states but I think it could become a thing in some of the states because of the amount of shootings that have happened.
